The name of the show was “Sauda” written by Mosa Telford and directed by Ayanna Waddell

which was held at the National Cultural Center on Saturday 11th of March 2023. The show was
scheduled to start at 11.00hrs but started at 11.42 a.m. and ended at 1.57 p.m. I however arrived
at the Cultural Center at 10.48 a.m. and entered at 11.05 a.m. because I needed to purchase my
ticket at the box office. This show was presented by the Guyana Prize Giving Literary Festival.
The main character of the show was sauda who was played by (Tashandra Inniss) and the
supporting actors Meri (Sonia Yarde) Delores () Esmond () and Rhonda (). The play had four
shadows who are Shadow 1 Shadow 2 Shadow 3 and Shadow 4.
The theme of this play was about colorism, sexual assault, sexual work, manipulation & teenage
pregnancy. Before the start of the play house music was playing and the closer to the start of the
play mood music began. To start the play, we learned that sauda was a fifteen-year-old who
became pregnant and was kicked out of her house by her mother Delores who couldn’t stand the
pain of her only daughter being pregnant at that age. After being kicked out sauda was later
housed by her neighbor Meri who took her in and said she will take care of her but she needed to
get rid of her child
The costumes each actor used fitted well with each scene. The costumes used by the actors
allowed the audience to have a better understanding as to who each character was and their role
in each scene. With each different costume it helped the audience understand the purpose of each
scene as well as let them know when a new scene has started. With each new costume for every
scene it helped to bring out what each actor more visually.
The make up on the other hand was something that completed mesmerized me as in each scene
that required make up it was done perfectly. From beauty makeup to the old age makeup to the
bleaching of sauda everything was done perfectly.
In each scene the light was perfect. There were five sets of lights used in the play Red, Green,
Blue, Amber and Pink. The red lights were used to showcase the emotion anger, the personality
of sauda since she was angry at her mother for throwing her out of the house so red light best
suited sauda red lights where also used to represent Meri’s anger as she talked about her story
and to showcase her house. Blue lights were used to represent night and to showcase time lapse
or the start and ending of each scene. White lights were used to represent the moon. The amber
lights were used to show day as well as the emotions and the house of Deloris.
