Introduction

▹ Hip-hop dance is a fusion dance type that combines aspects of

popping, locking, breaking, jazz, ballet, tap dancing, and other forms and
is usually performed to hip-hop, R&B, funk, electronic, or pop music.Hip-
hop dance differs from its component forms in that the dancing is
generally well-choreographed and is frequently done as part of an
ensemble. In contrast, its component techniques, like as breaking and
popping, are freestyle-oriented, whether done individually or in a group
setting.

Evolution Of HipHop

▹ The modern hip hop dance originated from three underground dance styles:
b-boying, locking, and popping. It was then combined with the principles and
choreography of jazz dance to develop a hybrid dance style. Break dancing
eventually came up. Synthesizer technology was introduced into hip-hop in
the 1980s. 1 August 201Break dancing eventually came up. Synthesizer
technology was introduced into hip-hop in the 1980s. A slew of hip-hop films
have been released. Hip-hop evolved became a vehicle for making social
statements.

Hip-hop dance emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s,
influenced by African dance motions, and developed as a new type
of dance performed on the street for the people. Hip-hop combines
elements of modern dance, tap, and swing, combining music and
intricate motions to create creativity. Hip-hop dance's early origins

and roots are most frequently linked with the East Coast, especially
New York City. However, at the same time, the West Coast
developed its own type of East Coast hip-hop dancing. The purpose
of hip-hop dance is to gather an audience and to entertain a crowd
of people. Hip hop is officially done on the streets and known as
the most popular street dance.

Elements Of HipHop

▹ When the style of hip hop was first created, it had six foundational
elements: DJing (aural), MCing (oral), Beatboxing (vocal), Breakdancing
(physical), Graffiti (visual), and Fashion.

6
DJing started in the 1970s with its

DJing
trademark innovative breaks and
isolation of the percussive sounds.
In these days, DJs like Kool DJ
Herc, Kurtis Blow, and Grand
Master Flash combined their
sound with brilliant rhymes,
gaining their prominence in the
music world.

7
MCing is a form of poetic and verbal
“acrobatics.” It was inspired by ancient

Mcing
African culture and oral tradition and was
also known as “rapping.” Rapping differed
from other popular singing forms because
of its rapid-fire wordplay, freestyle rhymes,
and lyrics that told stories about urban life
as rappers of the time knew it.

8
Beat ▹ Beatboxing was also a part of MCing,
given that it had a vocal element.

Boxing
However, instead of a music track,
different sounds were made using
the mouth to create a beat and tune
that served as the base upon which
raps were spoken.

9
Break
It all started with groups like Shaka Zulu
Kings, Zulu Queens, and the Rock Steady
Crew. These dancers gave rise to

dancing
breakdancing, otherwise known as B-Boying
or B-Girling. Also described as “poetry in
motion,” breakdance combines acrobatics,
gymnastics, Capoeira, martial arts, and
other cultural dances.

10
Perhaps the most controversial of all the
elements, graffiti has and continues to be

Graffiti
considered “vandalism” to many. It is
signified by “tags,” or creatively designed
spray-painted signatures of graffiti artists,
sprayed on walls, garbage cans, and other
public surfaces. Today, in various parts of
Toronto, Montreal, and other major cities,
approved graffiti has evolved into
enormous, beautiful, colorful illustrations
that cover walls and even entire sides of
buildings.

11
An element that has changed a lot over the
years is the fashion aspect of hip hop. One’s
image used to be extremely important in

Fashion
the early hip hop scene—baggy jeans,
loose-fitting clothing, basketball jerseys,
graphic tees, bandanas, sports shoes, and a
hat. Fashion was a way to show that you
belonged in the scene and that you
understood or experienced the culture,
urban heritage, and current issues.
Nowadays, hip hop is no longer defined by
appearance. Many of today’s hip hop artists
have created their own look to show their
individuality and uniqueness.
