Once a placement has been confirmed:

Before your placement begins, it is important to familiarise yourself with the setting.

 Contact (email or phone) must be made with the placement school/centre and a preliminary
or first visit arranged (please note – in the case of a rural/regional placement a preliminary
visit may not be possible – in this instance, a preliminary telephone contact will suffice).
 At least one week prior to the commencement of your placement a visit to the setting
provides an opportunity for you to introduce yourself and to confirm the placement
requirements. This should include; start time, dress code, where to present yourself,
what to bring and any orientation details.
 Some education settings may have organised and structured briefing sessions that they
require you to attend. These sessions may cater for a group of students undertaking a
placement and include a tour of the site, workplace, health and safety awareness, site
policies and procedures etc.
 A review of the site website will also provide you with insight into the mission and vision of
the setting, committee structures, leadership teams, site priorities and strategic plans and
much more.
 Pre-prepare your work folders and teaching materials that may be needed during
placement.
 Organise or plan transport for the duration of the placement.
 Plan your attire that aligns with the school dress policy.
 Consider your part-time work commitments to allow your fulltime commitment to
professional experience.

If the School/Centre is not aware of your placement please contact the Professional
Experience Office.
