DATA WAREHOUSE

For each of the three business goals specified in the case study, the improvements along with
the specific data that would have to be stored in the data warehouse to analyse ways to
achieve those improvements. The following are the three business goals for data warehouse.

Improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction):

One way to improve the patient experience of care could be to reduce the rate of hospital
readmissions. Patients who are readmitted to the hospital shortly after discharge can
experience a negative impact on their health and well-being, as well as increased healthcare
costs.

To analyse ways to reduce the rate of hospital readmissions, data about the patient’s medical
history, diagnostic tests, and any complications that arise during the initial hospital stay
would need to be captured in the data warehouse. Furthermore, data on the patient’s post-
discharge care, such as follow up appointments, medication adherence need to be collected.

The required data could be obtained from a variety of sources, including electronic health
records (EHRs), hospital administrative data, and insurance provider claims data.
Furthermore, patient surveys could be used to gather feedback on their hospital experience as
well as any issues or ineffiencies in care delivery.

Improving the health of populations:

One improvement for the business goal of improving the health of populations could be to
identify and address disparities in health outcomes among different demographic groups. This
would require data on demographic factors such as age, gender, income, education level, and
health outcomes.

The data warehouse could obtain this information from a variety of sources, including
electronic health records, claims data, public health surveillance systems and surveys. The
data would need to be standardised and integrated in such a way that disparities across
different population groups could be analysed. Once the data is stored in the data warehouse,
statistical analyses and data visualization tools could be used to identify the disparities and
develop targeted inventions to address them.
Reducing per person cost of health care:

One improvement to reduce the per person cost of healthcare could be to identify and address
the inefficiencies in the healthcare delivery process. For example, analysing the length of
hospital stays and identifying factors that contribute to longer stays, could aid in identifying
areas for improvement and cost savings.

In order to analyse the length of hospital stays and identify factors that contribute to longer
stays, data about the patients medical history that arise during the stay would need to be
captured and analysed in the data warehouse. Additionally, data about the provider who
ordered the procedures and their prior ordering history, as well as about hospital resource
utilization could also be useful.

The required data could be obtained from a variety of sources, including electronic health
records (EHRs), hospital administrative data, and insurance provider claims data.
Furthermore, patients surveys could be used to gather feedback on their hospital experience
as well as any areas where they encountered inefficiencies in care delivery.
