WHAT IS FOMO

The fear of missing out (FOMO) is an emotional response to the

belief that other people are living better, more satisfying lives or
that important opportunities are being missed. FOMO often
leads to feelings of unease, dissatisfaction, depression and
stress. For example,FOMO can happen when you don’t get
invited to a party, when your co-workers go out after work
without you, or when you aren’t participating in the latest
trends on social media....etc

CAUSES OF FOMO
FOMO has many different faces and triggers.

Friends’ activities: FOMO is often related to our friends’ and

acquaintances’ activities that we’re not involved in. This can lead to the
fear that we’re being excluded and that we’re not liked by the people
that are important to us.

Too many options: However, fear of missing out can also be triggered
without our friends being involved, for example by the sheer amount of
possibilities for our free time. Should I have gone to that other concert?
Maybe the other job would have been better?

Staying in the loop: Another cause of FOMO is the endless flow of news
that is only a click away at any time thanks to our smartphones. It’s
practically impossible to always be up to date with absolutely
everything. But people who suffer from fear of missing out feel they
need to be, clicking back and forth from newsfeed to online newspaper
to messaging app so as not to miss a single trend, development or
opportunity.

detrimental, FOMO can also incite unhealthy behaviors like texting while driving, an
act that can be deadly All of these visible effects are reflective of FOMO's impact on
mental health. As mentioned before, feelings of depression, fear, anxiety, and stress
can emerge in response to FOMO as well as dissatisfaction with life. A person
experiencing FOMO might also find themselves constantly agonizing over what
everyone else is doing, causing them to miss out on their own life. However, FOMO is
not a mental health condition, it is an emotion that is driven by thoughts. . Therefore,
FOMO could be a symptom of a bigger problem.
