Week Six
In discussion with my TA and UC we
will discuss whether I have built
relationships with the students and based
on those relationships if I have made my
lessons more engaging for the students.
We will also discuss the classroom
environment I created throughout my
practicum and whether or not it was
positive and effective.
Midway Reflection
Over the past few weeks I have built solid relationships with my students. In my first few days I learned 95% of their names and this made classroom
management easier when I could call out names so I had their attention. I have been told that is PS2 it is harder to make those connections because the
students have been in their classroom setting for a while. Despite being told this, I think I have fostered great relationships with most of my students. I have
lots of students who have told me that I am their favourite teacher and that they wish I could stay until the end of the year. I have had a few students confide
in my with issues both inside and outside the classroom. Most of the students also seem to really want to get to know me and ask me about my life. These
relationships have made managing these classes a lot easier. I think it is because they like me and that I have their respect when I am teaching. There are still
a few who I have yet to make a connection but I am slowly working my way to them. I am engaging in conversation with them and asking about their
interests to try and get them to interact with me and to see that I care about them. Overall, I think I am coming along nicely with my goal for the semester.
Over the coming weeks, I hope to learn even more about my students so that I can learn their cues as to when they need a break or if something is off. I will
then be able to plan better lessons for them based on these interests and needs within the classroom.
Final Reflection
Throughout my second practicum I have made some amazing and fulfilling connections with my students. I have had students share deeply personal
information about themselves with me and asked for help in non-academic areas of their lives. I have had to have difficult conversations with some students
but those conversations did not damage the rapport we created. Multiple students have gone out of their way to make me something from their option class
and bring it me with sweet little notes. I have been called a “comfort person”, I have been confided in for gender identity, learned Blackfoot language and
discussed out favourite sports. Additionally, I have lots of students already sad that I am leaving because they said I made math fun and understandable. By
building and fostering these connections I have also been able to see what motivates my students and what engages them in their learning. Therefore, I have
been able to plan lessons where there are games between the class and myself as well as competition between groups of students. This has led to some loud
and chaotic lessons where the students were so excited and engaged but also learning in the process. I have had so much fun with these students and I am so
sad to be leaving. I have learned so much about creating connections and using those connections to engage the students in their learning while have a fun
and positive learning environment.
