DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SIENCE 7

ACIDS AND BASES

I. Objectives and Outcomes:

At the end of discussion, the students should be able to:

A. Arrange the following household items from the most

Acidic to most basic.
B. Find out if a given sample of water from different source is acidic or basic

Using plant indicator.

C.Know the importance of pH scale in our lives.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Acids and Bases: Determining the acidity or basicity of water
from different sources are.

river, lake, or stream, pond, canal, faucet, bottle water (Distilled
or mineral), and Test tube (or 12 Cups), 6 droppers, 6 plastic
teaspoons.
D. Value Focus: Students should be able to determine the things on his/her
Environment that he/she see and takes which have acids and bases.

A. Pre laboratory Activities

“Who wants to lead the prayer?” “Students answer may vary?”

“Our Father”

“Good morning class!” “Good morning too ma’am!”

“Okay, Class please be sited”

B. Review

“Class, yesterday we identify the nature of your “Yes ma’am”

samples. Am I right?”

acidic?” “Students answer may vary”

“How about in weekly acidic?” “sugar in water, coconut water (from buko) and
tap water (water from the faucet.”
“Students answer may vary”
“Very good!”

“Tooth paste”
“What did you use as your sample if you “Students answer may vary”
remember?”

“Okay.”

C. Activity Proper

“So, now let’s move-on to the next Part of the

activity. Determining the acidity or basicity of water
from different sources In this part of Activity 1, you
will find out how acidic or basic the samples of water
from different.

“Use the material needed that I have listed yesterday

(Part C).

“Place one (1) teaspoon of each sample in each well

of the tube.” “Students will do the task.”

“Add 8-10 drops (or ½ teaspoon) of the indicator

solution to the first sample. Note: If the sample is “Students will do the task.”
solid, wet a pinch (size of 2-3 match heads) of the
solidwith about ½ teaspoon of distilled water.“

“Use one dropper for one kind of sample. TAKE

Wash each dropper CARE! After one use. Do not
mix samples!” “Students will do the task.”

“Note the color produced. Record your observations

in column 2 of Table 2.” “Okay, ma’am!”

Strongly acidic: red to pale red
Weakly acidic: blue
Weakly basic: green
Strongly basic: yellow
“Students will do the task.”
D. Post laboratory Activities

1. Discussion:

“You can now operationally distinguish between

acidic and basic mixtures using plant indicators.”

“So, more than that, using the plant extract you

prepared it allowed you to further determine the
degree of acidity or basicity of a mixture you are also
able to find out how strongly acidic or basic mixtures
were.”

“There is another method that we can find out or

indicate the acidity or basicity of a mixture through
pH scale.”

“So, pH scale or potential hydrogen has 0-14 scale

where less than 7 are acidic and the bases are greater
than 7.”

“In this table we can see know the acidity of the

samples that we have.”

Table 3. Approximately pH values of some samples

of matter.

Sample of Matter pH
Gastric juice 1.6-1.8
Lemon juice 2.1-2.3
Vinegar 2.4-3.4
Soft drink 2.0-4.0
Urine 5.5-7.0
Rainwater 5.6
Milk 6.3-6.6
Saliva 6.2-7-4
Pure water 7.0
Blood 7.35-7.45
Fresh egg white 7.6-8.0
Seawater 8.4
Laundry detergents 11
Household bleach 12.8
Drain cleaner 13.0

Activity 2
Color range, pH scale!

“So, your result in Activity 1, Part B and C will be

used to determine the pH of the solutions you tested.
Use the ff. pH scale for the eggplant indicator”

“Present your results in a table similar to Table 4.”

“The eggplant indicator shows the following color

changes:”

After 3mins.
“Students will do the task.”

“Okay class are you done?”

“Very good! So, pass your answer in front.”

“Now, that you already know or aware about pH or

potential hydrogen and some common mixtures.
Why is it important to know?

“Very good! It is important know to balance the pH

levels in our body to have a healthy life style” “Yes ma’am!”

“Any other idea?” “Okay ma’am!”

“Very good! To prevent the growth of harmful “It is important to know so that we aware on
bacteria because bacteria grow best at or near pH 7.” what kind of food or things that are acidic and
basic.”
“What else?” “Students will do the task.”

“Yes! To know how acidic the soil and basic soil was
because pH affects the nutrients from the soil
become available to plants because plants grow in a
narrow pH range.”
“To avoid sickness.”
“And it is important to us to be able to know how “Students answer may vary.”
acidic the rainwater because some of us drink it that

“Students answer may vary.”
“And to keep the specific levels of personal care
product to avoid harmful effects on our body.

“Sight some examples of personal product.” “To know how acidic and basic the water and
soil was.”
“Like hair conditioner and so on and so for.” “Students answer may vary.”

D. Application:

“The students will give some importance know the

pH scale.”

“After 5 mins.”

“Are you done?”

“Very good! So past the paper in the center eye.”

E. Generalization:

“What is the scale of pH scale?”

“What is the other method that we can find out or

indicate the acidity or basicity of a mixture?”

“Why do you think is it important to know about

pH?”
“Yes ma’am!”
“pH scale or potential hydrogen has 0-14 scale
where less than 7 are acidic and the bases are
greater than 7.”

“Through pH scale”

“To prevent the growth of harmful bacteria

because bacteria grow best at or near pH 7.

grow in a narrow pH range.”

3. Any one of the answers below is considered

correct.
4. Give at least two (2) safe ways you should
practice when you handle an acid, like muriatic acid. (a) Some plants grow well in acidic soil while
others prefer basic soil. Farmers need to know
the pH of their soil since plants will only grow
in a specific pH range.

(b) The pH also affects how much nutrients

from the soil become available to plants.
