EPL Activity Sorting Exercises

This activity will strengthen your child’s concentration and focus on the
task at hand. Plus the use of tongs will strengthen your child’s grip and
wrist action. You will need:

5 bowls, tongs, 1 tray, small items that can be found in your home like
buttons, raw macaroni or shell noodles, red beans, marbles, small bottle
caps, safety pins or paper clips, etc. Gather at least 4 to 5 pieces of each
small objects. You will only need 4 different kinds of objects to be sorted
into the 4 bowls. The 5th bowl will be used to hold all the different
objects. Present the entire tray as seen in the image below, and ask your
child to use the tongs to sort out these tiny objects, one at a time into
the respective bowls. The child can repeat this activity as many times as
he wants. To finish off this activity, the child must learn to keep all of
the items back onto a shelf for future use.

Photo Activity

For this activity, make sure that there are lots of dried
clothes ready to be folded available. On the bed or on a
clean floor, teach your child how to fold a shirt, pants or
shorts, a pair of socks, underwear and a blouse. Then ask
your child to fold the other clothes and pile them up
according to their categories, i.e. socks together, underwear
in a pile, shirts stacked together, etc. Take a photo of this
and send it to the teacher in charge via email or social
media. This picture will be put in another collage entitled
“EPL at home”. This is a fantastic extension of what the
children do in school at home. This is one of the best
activities for the segment of “Care of Self” in Exercises of
Practical Life in the Montessori classroom. Have fun all!
