1. PROJECT SUMMARY
2. ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Runyakitara Da-awa Agency was first registered on 5th Oct , 2021. It operates in the Runyakitara
speaking areas of Ankole-Kigezi, Bunyoro Tooro and Rwenzururu subregions. The major purpose
of its establishment was empowering the Runyakitara speaking people in general and Runyakitara
speaking Muslims in particular who have been marginalized and suppressed completely by migrant
tribes. We aim at uplifting the Banyakitara communities in all of the social, economic, educational,
health and research aspects.
The major activities of the Agency are: socially through mass media address in talk shows,
preachings, social media and regional outreach awareness programs, educationally through;
illiteracy eradication programs, community mobilization, career guidance, and working with
educational institutions, economically via; supporting government programs such as Emyooga, job
creation, skill creation, and resource mobilization, health-wise through; health awareness such as
Covid-19 control programs, HIV/AIDS affected and the disabled support and guidance, moral and
reproductive health guidance for a girl child, community water and sanitation, business proposals
on health setups like health facilities and pharmacies, research such as; publications like
Runyakitara books, applications, and science innovations.
3. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
a. Problem Statement
Islam was spread in Uganda in 1844. Unfortunately, the rate at which Islam is spread in the
Western region is by far less than in other regions in Uganda. One of the common reasons for this
is language barrier since people understand better when ideas are clearly introduced in their
mother tongues. Most Banyakitara (Banyankole, Bakiga, Bahima, Banyoro, Batooro, Bakonjo etc)
consider Islam as a cultural product of Baganda. This confusion has persisted to date due to failed
adaptation of Muslim preachers to Runyakitara languages.
According to the Qur’an, Allah says; “And O dear Prophet, We have not sent you except with a
Prophethood that covers the entire mankind, heralding glad tidings and warnings, but most people
do not know (34:28). (Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him – is the Prophet
towards all mankind”. “And we did not send any messenger except in the language of his people
to state clearly for them… (14:4)”.
b. Rationale
The projects are very important as they will build capacity of Banyakitara Muslims to actively
participate in religious affairs as sheikhs, Kadhis and Mufti positions. Building in communities core
values and standards and proper understanding of Islam as a religion of peace, free from
extremism and thus reducing the tendencies of criminal acts in the name of religion. The projects
will also uplift the community standards of Banyakitara in western Uganda socially, economically,
educationally, health and research innovation aspects.
d. Projects achievements
e. Project activities
The projects activities shall include;
1. Community sensitizations through media presentations such as; tv talk shows, radios and
online television, YouTube and other social media platforms.
2. Actively embracing government programs especially in wealth creation such as; emyooga and
the parish model.
a. We request government in its policy of wealth creation to include Muslim communities
in western Uganda and Uganda at large. Muslim communities are heavily marginalized
and have been left out in such government economic avenues. The reason to this is
that according to Islamic doctrine usury (Riba) in financial dealings is prohibited and
government puts its money in microfinance institutions thereby barring Muslims from
active participation.
b. According to the financial institutions Act 2004 amendment done in 2016, the
establishment of a fully-fledged Islamic Financial Institutions was allowed and the
existing Financial Institutions were given the green light to offer the banking system
alongside their conventional banking services.
c. We therefore request government to avail Islamic banking windows in microfinance
institutions where our Muslim communities in western Uganda and Uganda at large
especially; groups of women, persons with disabilities, low income earners and persons
below the poverty line can access finances to invest in development projects.
d. RDA offers to champion government agenda on wealth creation projects involving
awareness creation, training, and community mobilizations to benefit in such projects
like National Agricultural Advisory Services.
3. Outreach programs in each and every districts in western Uganda with a purposeful inclusion
of the lowest person in the community.
4. Software developments such as; website, literature apps in Runyakitara languages for different
for different information products like Runyankole Qur’an, important books and other written
materials on socio-economic or political development.
5. Securing bursaries, scholarships and packages for scholastic materials especially for the
marginalized and talented students in the effort to eradicate ignorance and illiteracy in our
communities.
6. Working with established educational institutions like IUIU and others to extend their branches
to areas in western Uganda
7. Actively participating in scientific research and development such as uplifting the standards of
traditional medicine practices like; herbalism, bone setting, etc thereby uplifting our
communities and being part in the solution of the global health challenges.
f. Target Beneficiaries
The project will be implemented in the areas of greater western Uganda among the
Banyakitara such as; Ankore-Kigezi, and Bunyoro-Tooro sub-regions both males and females.
