INTRODUCTION

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in
2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and
into the future. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an essential call to
action for all nations, which are developed and developing in a global partnership, are at the
center of it.
Furthermore, the Sustainable Development Goals are an immense economic driver. According to
the United Nations, developing countries alone lack $2.5 to $3 trillion annually to achieve the
goals. 380 million jobs were expect to create worldwide in a wide range of industries because of
attaining these goals. Up to $12 trillion in economic output expected to be unlocked annually by
the goals.
In SDG 16, concerns itself in promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to
justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. People
everywhere should be free of fear from all forms of violence and feel safe as they go about their
lives whatever their ethnicity, faith or sexual orientation. Violence in all forms and
manifestations have a destructive impact on a country’s development and derail the rule of law.
There are twelve targets in promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies.
Target 16.1: Reduce violence everywhere
Target 16.2: Protect children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking and violence
Target 16.3: Promote the rule of law and ensure equal access to justice
Target 16.4: Combat organized crime and illicit financial and arms flows
Target 16.5: Substantially reduce corruption and bribery
Target 16.6: Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions
Target 16.7: Ensure responsive, inclusive and representative decision-making
Target 16.8: Strengthen the participation in global governance
Target 16.9: Provide universal legal identity
Target 16.10: Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms
Target 16.a: Strengthen national institutions to prevent violence and combat crime and
terrorism
Target 16.b: Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies
In Sri Lanka non-traditional security threats such as shortage of food and resources including but
not limited to energy, contagious diseases such as the Covid-19 pandemic are associated with
heightened prevalence of mental disorders and distress which have directly contributed to
violence among men and women. The Sri Lanka College of Pediatricians (SLCP) that children
and young youths in particular have undergone two years of adverse circumstances due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. To compound this situation, they are victims of the current economic
crisis and political instability. In fact, a July 2022 report by Save the Children reveals the heavy
toll economic problems have had on children's mental health in Sri Lanka. The constant
oppression and suppression have led to visible increase of violence throughout the country with
the case of the murder of a 23-year-old university student being the most recent.
Thus, the promotion of good mental health can contribute to reduction of violence, and
psychosocial interventions are part of conflict transformation as a way to break the cycle of
violence.

OBJECTIVES

 To raise awareness about all forms of violence and related death rates in Sri Lanka
 The impact of the current economic crisis upon mental health and its association with
violence.
 Promoting of good mental health in alleviating mental distress and ensuing violence.
