TRIMESTER 3 2022

Assessment A: In-class activities (50%)

A1. Interview with a Manager Project (Group) – Oral
Presentation and Written Report (Group) (20%)
Overview
This assessment includes 2 main parts: 1. Group Oral Presentation; and 2. Group Written
Report.
You will be formed into groups of 4-6 members by your lecturer. Your team will be working
together to research and explore about current management issues, including the role of (1)
leadership and (2) real-life problem facing the interviewee. Your team will need to develop a
professional questionnaire that will address these elements. Use the textbook, supplemental
readings, and lectures for guidance on how to define and create the questions for the
interview.
In your team, find a manager (Vietnamese or foreigner) to interview. The manager should be
at a high enough level to be able to describe their leadership style and define a problem
clearly. Do not assume that the manager will know theoretical terms, therefore the group
must ask questions to connect the practical to the theory presented in the class.
Some elements that need to be explored in the interview would include (but not limited to) the
following:
▪ The organization, title, scope of work;
▪ Their personal leadership style;
▪ Common managing tasks, such as a typical day with relationship between their tasks
to four functions of management;
▪ A problem of the organization that has caused difficulties with finding a solution the
first time and how they eventually resolved that problem;
▪ An in-depth analysis of the problem, the group should be identifying the management
theories that were applied in that process;
▪ Basing on your knowledge from the course, providing recommendations for better
problem solving.
The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your: (a) understanding of the conceptual
material, (b) critical engagement with its practical implications for managers, and (c) the ability
to offer original insights, practical solutions and recommendations, and critical contributions.
These activities are intended to focus on developing students’ critical thinking and teamwork
skills, and are an opportunity for students to showcase both their conceptual mastery of the
course materials, as well as creativity in insight and perspective. These activities are NOT
designed for students to merely read and repeat materials from the assigned textbook, and
should demonstrate a high level of original and engaged thinking on the part of students.
Students will also be rewarded for their evident ability to produce coherent, team-based work
in their presentations and reports.

Style and format
Each team is required to create a 3-5-minute video of the
interview with subtitles. You must ensure to separate two parts:
problem and solution because there will be a class discussion
between those two parts.
The lecturer will provide the details of the format and expectations
of the assignment, including video, layout, etc. three weeks
before the assignment will be delivered.
The visual aid can be in MS PowerPoint, Prezi, or any
appropriate software that can support your presentation. Marks
will depend on the quality of presentation (visual aids, vocal

▪ DO NOT use any binding (i.e. plastic cover); and
▪ Print TWO slides per page
The team should be prepared to answer any questions from the
audience and lecturer.
All communication must be professional with all emails attached
to the appendix of the written essay. There MUST be at least a
professionally written email to ask the manager for an interview
(this would explain who you are, university you study, purpose of
the interview, time allocation, etc.) AND a follow up thank you
letter.
PART TWO:
A written report providing more detail of the presentation material
will have no more than 3,500 words. The report MUST be written
in APA format (APA 7th edition), including university standard
cover page, correct citation, and referencing. You are
recommended to use graphs, figures, and data to support your
argument. This report is based on the presentation. Include all
communications with the manager in the appendix. See grading
criteria for more detail.
Notes: File tittle format: “Group # Class Title of paper”
Length: 3,500 (+/- 10%) words for written report (excluding cover
page, appendix and references)
See Detailed Information section for further details.

Detailed information You will be formed into groups of 4-6 members by your lecturer.
Your team will be working together to research and explore a
contemporary management issue that has attracted national
and/or international media attention at some time during the past
year. You are expected to:
1. Identify the industry in which the company experiencing the
management issue is located. Analysis of the external and
international environments will inform you about the context in
which the issue has occurred and been managed.
2. Identify the company you will study in which the issue has taken
place. Determine the relevant internal environment factors that
pertain to the issue. The content of the lecture 3 is relevant here.
3. Provide a brief summary of the issue that the managers are
confronting.
4. Identify a relevant management topic from our lecture program
(e.g. human resources or leadership) relevant to the issue. Use this
theory as the ‘lens’ through which you critically evaluate the
performance of management in addressing the issue.
MAN101 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
TRIMESTER 3 2022

5. Make a judgement, based on the critical review you conduct in

steps 1-4 above, about the management strategies/decisions that
were tried to resolve the issue, and what worked or did not work,
and why.
6. Recommend and different approach you would have taken to
resolve the issue, and explain why. Your ability to link concepts
and theories to real life problems, and argue your opinion based on
evidence, is important here.
7. Provide a reference list of the information sources used, listed
in accordance with the APA 7th referencing system.
Examples of issues that your group might explore are: change that
has occurred in organisations, crisis management situations,
human resource management problems, or issues related to social
responsibility and ethical behaviour, etc.
Problems regarding any member’s contribution to this team project
will be addressed in the journal kept by each member. Each
student will critically evaluate meetings, communication and
project work undertaken by themselves and other members using
the peer evaluation form (on MyISB). These evaluation forms must
be submitted to the lecturer at the end of your group presentation.

▪ All assignments are required to be submitted with an Assignment Cover Sheet.
▪ Group assignments are to be submitted with a Group Assignment Cover Sheet as well
as a Peer Evaluation Form depending on the request of the unit instructor.
Non-contributing team members can sometimes be an issue with group-work structured
assessment. Individual student group work scores may be adjusted as a result of peer
dissatisfaction with a particular student’s contribution to group work assignments, as reflected
in submissions of the evaluation form.

🛈🛈 NOTE:
▪ Assignment cover sheets and the evaluation form can be located on ISB E-learning
system (https://e-learning.isb.edu.vn/)
▪ Students are advised to keep a copy of all assignments submitted for marking.
Submission style
Assignments are expected to achieve a professional standard:
▪ Be typed, one and a half spaced, on A4 paper
▪ Use a simple clear format, suitable for a report to senior management in a commercial
organization.
Submission method
Soft copy: submitted electronically via ISB E-learning system (https://e-learning.isb.edu.vn/)
before the deadline (Suggested title: Student name/ Groupname_Unitname_Name of
Assignment).
Hard copy: submitted to your lecturer(s) on the due date if required.
Late assignment and make-up policy
All quizzes, the mid-term tests, group assignments, and final exams must be taken on the
assigned dates. No late assignments will be accepted unless prior authorization is granted by
the Unit Coordinator. In case such an authorization is not granted, grade deduction will be
applied. The Unit Coordinator may decide not to accept assignments that are not submitted
within 3 days after the assignment due date. However, if there are extenuating or unforeseen
circumstances, the Unit Coordinator must be contacted before the quiz, midterm, group
assignment or final exam dates to authorize a make-up if required.

Attendance
Class attendance is compulsory and students should provide reasons for the failure to attend
the class on a particular lecture/workshop session. Students are required to attend a minimum
of 80% of all classes in order to secure class participation marks. Please let your lecturer(s)
and/or ISB know AND submit a request for absence form to the Student Advisor prior to the
session if you are unable to attend any session.
Cases equating to an absence:
▪ Arriving to class late by 15 minutes at the beginning,
▪ Arriving late by 5 minutes after the break
▪ Leaving prior to the scheduled end time without the permission of the lecturer

🛈🛈 IMPORTANT: Students will not be allowed to sit in the final examination if violating the
above absence rule.

Electronic Device Use

▪ Cell phones will be turned off or switched to vibrate mode before class starts.
▪ No phone calls or text messaging are allowed inside the classroom during class time.
▪ Portable listening and/or music devices may not be operated in the classroom.
▪ Headphones and/or ear buds of any type may not be worn while in the classroom
whether operating or not.
▪ Laptop and other electronic devices are not permitted unless specifically authorized
by the lecturer exclusively for note taking and doing class work.

🛈🛈 IMPORTANT: If you are in violation of these policies, you will be excused from class
and an absence will be assessed.

Email Etiquette
Your lecturers receive many emails each day. In order to enable them to respond to your emails
appropriately and in a timely fashion, students are asked to follow basic requirements of
professional communication.
Your emails should:
▪ Have a concise and descriptive title, including the class and name of the unit you are
enquiring about
▪ Be clear about the intention of their emails
▪ Use appropriate tone and language, proof-read what is written in the email before
sending it.
Students should also allow 3-4 working days for a response before following up. If the matter
is legitimately urgent, you may indicate “URGENT” in the email subject header.
Make an appointment: If your email request is complex and requires a lengthy response it
may be probably best to make an appointment with your lecturer/instructor to meet in person.

Disability Support Services

Students with disabilities are advised that accommodations and services are available at UEH-
ISB. It is the student's responsibility to contact the UEH-ISB office and submit appropriate
documentation prior to receiving such services.
