CANADA’S 10 LEAST WANTED

FOODBORNE PATHOGENS
LEAST
Pathogens  are  microorganisms  sometimes  found  in  your  food.  When  one  of  the  4  C’s
(cook,  chill,  contain  and  clean)  isn’t  followed,  these  pathogens  can  make  you  sick.
They  include  bacteria,  viruses  and  parasites.

Your  task:  To  create  a  Canada’s  Least  Wanted  poster  for  one  of  the  most        common
foodborne  pathogens.

Your  wanted  poster  must  include  the  following  information:

v Pathogen’s  name
v A  picture  (can  be  of  what  the  pathogen  actually  looks  like,  or  a  cartoon  drawing
depicting  a  monster)
v Brief  description  of  the  pathogen
v Last  known  location  (where  do  we  typically  see  this  pathogen/what  kinds  of  foods?)
v How  to  avoid  coming  into  contact  with  it
v Other  details  as  necessary  for  creating  a  Least  Wanted  poster  (ie.  colour,  reward,  etc).

This  activity  was  inspired  by  the  Government  of  Canada’s  publication  on  Least  Wanted
Foodborne  Pathogens.  You  can  view  the  document  here:
http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2011/inspection/A104-‐91-‐2011-‐eng.pdf

I  printed  the  mug  shots  of  the  various  pathogens,  and  students  pulled  one  at  random  from  a
jar  to  determine  the  topic  they  would  present  on.
