My school had a new volleyball coach and I attended their training recently. On my
first day of training, our coach talked about the sport and its rules. We were divided into two
teams. 1 Between us, there was a net about a few metres high. Each team tried to
score points by trying to get the ball to touch the floor in the opponents’ court. We played hard
but it was obvious we needed more training.
I enjoyed the first day of training and it was great working out with other team
members. Coach Jackson even spoke to me personally. 2 He also said that my
height would definitely be an advantage in this sport. He wanted me to give it a shot in the
school volleyball team. 3
I have talked to my parents about this and they encourage me to go for it.
My mother thinks this could be a great opportunity to gain new experience and make new
friends. 4 I want to see how far I can go with this. Plus, I have always been a fan of
sports. 5 I might not have enough time for my homework and revision once I start
Instead of giving up, I spent some time doing research on how to manage my time
better. I found out my answers. 6 And if I follow my timetable and do things the right
way, I will be fine. I think this will be a good experience for me.
E I need a timetable.

Questions 1-6
You are going to read a text about going to a new boarding school.
Six sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (35 – 40).
There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.
It is my first day at a boarding school far from home. I am rather nervous yet excited too. I walk past the school
gates. 1 The boarding school is big and well-maintained. What takes my breath away is the huge
hall which has 8 badminton courts. I am a badminton fan. 2 The school also has basketball and
volleyball courts. The school is equipped with a swimming pool complete with shower rooms. 3
However, I hope I would be able to overcome my fear.
I share a room with two other students. My roommates are Shila and Azlina. 4 They like to
crack jokes. I enjoy their company as they make me laugh. The room is rather spacious and clean. Each of us is
provided with a bed and a study table. The only complaint I have is there is no water heater in the bathroom. The
water here seems to be very cold. 5
As for the lessons, we have not started yet. However, we have already had our first English Language
lesson. Our teacher, MrsVasanthy, sounds fun. I feel we will enjoy learning from her. She tells us that a drama
competition will be held in September.
I am beginning to like my new school. 6 I’m sure it will be an exciting year ahead.

When we (0) was young, my sister and I had a wonderful idea to buy a gift for our mother on
Mother’s Day. As we did not have (1) many money, we went around the neighbourhood to
collect cans and plastic bottles to sell to the recycling centre. Many (2) resident in the area
kindly donated the recyclable items to us. (3) Than, we headed to the centre and sold the
items. We were only able to get a total of RM5. After that, (4) she went to a florist to buy
some roses. With that amount of money, we were (5) wonder if that would be enough. The
florist said that what we (6) have was insufficient. We were disappointed. However, the florist
walked to the back of the shop (7) but brought out a small pot of rose plant. She gave it to us
for free. We were very delighted and thanked her for her (8) kind. It was the best Mother’s
Day gift for our mother.
