Assignment # 6 Color Study

Overall Objectives:
 To continue our study of color as a major Element of Art.
 To become familiar with color combinations.
 To become comfortable with mixing, primary and secondary colors,
implementing colors in a planned color scheme, and knowing these
schemes by name.

1. Color Study - Begin by choosing your theme for you paintings. Your image
must be a landscape. You can get inspiration from a photo you have taken or a
picture in a magazine. Make your subject interesting, but not too complicated –
you will be painting it 4 times Trace your design onto tracing paper. Put tracing
paper on the light table and copy design 4 times on to tag board provided. Paint
each of the 4 paintings in the following color schemes: (15 points each)
1. Monochromatic: using only one color, black and white to create different
tints and shades of that color.

2. Analogous: colors that sit side by side on the color wheel and share a
common hue. (example: yellow, yellow-green, green, green-blue and blue)
You may also use white in your palette.

3. Complementary: Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel
(red-green, blue-orange, yellow-purple) You may also have white on your
palette.
Choose ONE of the remaining two, either:
4. Color Triad: 3 colors placed equal distance on the color wheel (Primary
triad-red, yellow, blue. Secondary color triad orange, green and purple)
You may also add white to your palette.
OR:
5. Split Complementary: One color and the two colors on either side of its
complement. (blue, yellow-orange, red-orange) You may also add white to
your palette.
2. Take the 4 color studies that you have just completed and arrange them into
one interesting and complete design. You can repeat elements of each color
study, make a grid or section your paintings and put them together in an
interesting fashion. (10 points)

3. Turn in your completed assignment along with this sheet on the date listed
below. (5 points)
