AE658 – Design of Powerplants for Aircraft

Assignment – 3
Max. Points = 250

1. Explain the types of inlets/intakes for supersonic flight regimes. (50 points)

2. A fixed geometry internal compression intake is designed for M = 3.0. When flying at M = 2.0
the inlet suddenly gets unstarted. Compute:

i) Pressure recovery factors for (a) started , (b) unstarted condition

ii) The percentage of air flow spilled when the intake is unstarted (50 points)

3. Compute the i) total pressure recovery, ii) area ratio of an external compression jet engine
intake operating over Mach number range of 1 to 2. Compare this with an internal
compression intake. [Hint; Find the mach number at which the shock is first detached] (100
points).

4. An axisymmetric jet engine exhaust nozzle operates with a mass flow of 75 kg/s with following
parameters : Entry conditions, stagnation/total pressure is 350 kPa, stagnation/total
temperature is 1600 K, and exit to throat area ratio 1.8, exit to throat pressure ratio, P09/P08
= 0.98, discharge coefficient, Cd = 0.98 and ambient pressure of 40 kPa. Compute the various
nozzle flow parameters and finally the thrust created by this nozzle. (50 points)
