GRAVITATION AND
FRICTIONAL FORCES
3RD QUARTER: LESSON 1
HOW ARE YOU
TODAY?
DRILL
24 + 22 = ?

27 x 2 = ?
72 / 9 = ?
1827 / 9 = ?
OBJECTIVES
● Define Gravity
● Relate Gravity, weight and mass
● Know how friction and gravity affect
movements of different objects
FORMULA FOR WEIGHT:
wEIGHT = MASS X GRAVITATIONAL FIELD STRENGTH

UNITS FOR :
WEIGHT IS IN NEWTONS (N)
MASS IS IN KILOGRAMS (KG)
EARTH’S GRAVITY IS 9.8 m/s2
GRAVITY

Isaac Newton got the idea of gravity from his observation of an

apple falling from a tree.

Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that the force of

gravity acts between all objects in the universe.
Increase in mass = Increase in gravitational force
The Sun is the only
star in our solar
system. It is the
center of our solar
system, and its
gravity holds the
solar system
together.
Weight
The weight of an object depends
on its mass.

The greater the mass of an

object, the greater is its weight.
3. What is the mass of a sack of
rice that has a weight of
650N?
