FM GLOBAL

• Established in1835 (Rhode Island, US)

• International property insurance and loss prevention engineering
company
• Approx. 130 branches all over the world
• FM DS 2.8 Allow to use NFPA 13 Edition 2007 with 12 exceptions
FM 2-8 (2010 Edition)

2016/17 Eğitim Seminerleri

Main exceptions to NFPA 13 Edition 2007

Cable bracing is not allowed Branch Line Restraint is not required

- Requires to Longitudinal brace the branches if >2 ½”

- Slenderness ratio limited to Kl/r=200
- Seismic Coefficient Cp not based on Ss but on FM Global maps Calculate and prevent
Vertical Uplift

2016/17 Eğitim Seminerleri

How To Calculate the Seismic Loads
Seismic horizontal force (Fwp) must be determined as follows:

Fwp = G x Wp

• G : seismic coefficient (based on FM Global maps)

50 YEAR ZONE G=0.75

100 YEAR ZONE G=0.50
250 YEAR ZONE G=0.40
500 YEAR ZONE G=0.40
>500 YEAR ZONE G=0

• Wp: weight of piping system being braced

Seismic Bracing Design According to FM GLOBAL LOSS
PREVENTION DATA SHEET 2-8 (MAY 2010)

2016/17 Eğitim Seminerleri

Why Brace?

• Fire is the most common side effect after earthquakes

• Keep the system intact
• Avoid damage due to water leakage
• Source of water damaged
• Separated sprinkler pipe
• Broken sprinkler due to impact with other elements
• Broken sprinkler due to differential movement between sprinkler pipe and suspended ceilings
• Broken in-rack sprinkler system due to excessive rack movement

2016/17 Eğitim Seminerleri

How it can be prevented?

Sway bracing, flexibility, clearance, and anchorage

1. Bracing piping and equipment to minimize uncontrolled differential movement

• Use appropriate hangers and braces
• Properly allocate and attach to the structure
• Properly calculate the seismic forces

2. Providing flexibility on piping systems and on other equipment

• Flexible couplings
• Pipe joints

3. Providing clearance between piping or equipment and structural members, walls, floors, or other objects

4. Providing anchorage to minimize potential sliding and/or overturning.
