Let’s Read:
A. What id SOCIETY?
▪ The term society is derived from the Latin word ‘socius’, which means companionship or
friendship.
▪ Two primary components of a society are its culture and its social structure.
▪ Society is one of the basic sociological terms. In simple sense, society is a large grouping that
shares the same geographical territory, shares a common culture and social structure, and
expected to abide by the some laws
Why is Sociology important? The following statements are imperative reasons why
sociology is relatively important in society.
• Sociology is the scientific study of social interactions and of social organization
–Michael
• It is a systematic study of social life (institutions, cultures, and behavior
patterns) created by people and in turn influencing thir behavior in a continuous
interaction. - R. Schaefer
• Is the study of human behaviors as they are affected by social interactions
within groups, organizations, societies, and the planet. - J. Ferrante
• “Sociology is the study of relationship between man and his human
environment.” -H P Fairchild
• Sociology can be defined as the study of man and his environment in their
relation with each other
• Sociology is the study of social relationships.

Nature of Society
1. Society consists of people ▪ Society is composed of people. Without people there can be no
society, no social relationship and no social life at all.
2. Mutual awareness and mutual interaction ▪ Society is a group of people in continuous
interactions with each other. A social interaction is made possible because of mutual
awareness. Society is understood as a network of social relations. Thus, social relationship
implies mutual awareness.
3. Co-operation and division of labor ▪ Division of labor involves the assignment to each unit
or group a specific share of a common task. For example: Common task of providing the
banking service involves counter services, accountancy, loan lending etc. division of labor
is possible because of co-operation.
4. Society is dynamic ▪ Society is not static, but it is dynamic. Changeability is an inherent
quality of human beings. No society can even remain constant for any length of time.
5. Social control ▪ Absolute freedom makes man’s life like other animal beings. So society has
its own ways of controlling the behavior of its members. For this, society has formal and
informal means of social control. Customs, traditions, mores folkways, manners are the
informal means of social control, whereas law, police, constitution, police are formal means
of social control.
Let’s remember: Society usually refers to group of people who live and work together or
who share social norms and values. It is simply a web of social relationship. People interact
in a defined territory and share a culture. Today the structure of society has been changed
from hunting and gathering societies and agrarian societies to industrial society. But still
we need society from birth to till death for the performance of social values norms etc

and want.
• A community is also a place in which people live, work and play together.

C. What is Education?
Education has been defined by many educationists, philosophers and authors in a vast
exemplary words. It is a word we hear very familiar in our everyday life, because education
is considered the most significant activity in any society.
[Prof. Ed 4] [The Teacher and the Community School Culture and Organizational Page 6 of 24

D. What is Social Interaction
A social interaction is an exchange between two or more individuals and is a building block
of society. Social interaction can be studied between groups of two (dyads), three (triads) or larger
social groups. By interacting with one another, people design rules, institutions and systems within
which they seek to live.
[Prof. Ed 4] [The Teacher and the Community School Culture and Organizational Page 7 of 24
Leadership ]
A social interaction or social relation is the way people talk and act with each other. It may
include interactions in a team, family or bureaucracy. It includes any relationship between two or
more individuals. It is a source of socialization and it characterizes all types of social relationships.
Social interaction is the process of reciprocal influence exercised by individuals over one
another during social encounters. Usually it refers to face-to-face encounters in which people are
physically present with one another for a specified duration. However, in contemporary society we
can also think of social encounters that are technologically mediated like texting, skyping, or
messaging.
Society is based on the social construction of reality. How we define society influences how
society actually is. Likewise, how we see other people influences their actions as well as our actions
toward them. We all take on various roles throughout our lives, and our social interactions depend on
what types of roles we assume, who we assume them with, and the scene where interaction takes
place.
E. School Culture
According to the Glossary of Education Reform (2014), the term school culture generally
refers to the beliefs, perceptions, relationships, attitudes, and written and unwritten rules that shape
and influence every aspect of how a school functions, but the term also encompasses more concrete
issues such as the physical and emotional safety of students, the orderliness of classrooms and public
spaces, or the degree to which a school embraces and celebrates racial, ethnic, linguistic, or cultural
diversity.
School culture has become a central concept in many efforts to change how schools operate and
improve educational results. While a school culture is heavily influenced by its institutional history,
culture also shapes social patterns, habits, and dynamics that influence future behaviors, which could
become an obstacle to reform and improvement
