Section 1: Locating Area Hotspots with APPs

Introduction
Different Internet tools are available to locate both free and fee-based hot-spots. In this
section you use one of those tools to find hotspots in your area.

Procedure:
1. Download WiFi Map or Hotspot Finder app.
2. Use the app to find and locate the available hotspot nearby your location.
3. What information the app can provide about the available hotspot?
In general, a hotspot's basic information will include its name, address, as and
password if applicable, the ping measured in milliseconds, download speed and
upload speed, and the owner.
Based on the running speed test of the hotspot itself, Wi-Fi health score
becomes the main indicator of the available hotspot on the map. A second value
indicates the last time the hotspot was accessed, the third value represents the
last time it was accessed. Finally, there is the last signal, which indicates
whether a particular wifi hotspot is still discoverable by mobile devices, but
doesn't indicate that it has ever been connected to.

Section 2: Locating Area Hotspots with Bell

In this section you use a different online tool to find hotspots in your area.

Procedure:
1. Open a new tab on your Web browser that is still open from the previous project
and go to https://www3.bellmts.ca/mts/services/wifi+hotspot+locator
Or find a similar URL in your country to give you the hotspot locations.
Note: It is not unusual for Web sites to change. If the URL above no longer functions then open a search
engine and search for “ Bell MTS”.

2. Instead of allowing you to click on a map, the default search asks you to enter a
location as the focal point of the search. Enter an address as the starting point.
3. Click go.
4. Compare your results with the results you received using Hotspot- Locations.

5. Between Hotspot- Locations and Bell, which tool has more hotspots listed? Why
is there a difference?
In the default search, the listings only provide the address and a brief
description, but the hotspot location actually provides a pinpointed location
on the map, while the hotspot location only provides a brief description.

2
Also, if we zoom out from the map, we can actually see more hotspots in
more general areas.
6. Now compare the options available on Bell with those available on Hotspot-
Locations. Which are more comprehensive?
Using Bell instead of Hotspot Location, I find it more precise and detailed
included than the map option. In addition to providing information such as
Network ID, directions and address, the bell default option also shows a
glimpse of location on a minimap. Even the default search included
hotspots miles away from the location, so it was possible to search even
farther.

7. How would you rate Bell in terms of ease of use, accuracy, options, etc.? Which
would you recommend to another wireless user?
In terms of usage and everything, I found that Bell is rather easy to use
and also comprehensive to use for everyone since that it provides simple
and yet precise location of hotspots available in the searched area,
making it more viable for travelers to use.
8. Close your Web browser.

Section 3: Installing Network Meter Tool

Introduction
How do you locate a WLAN hotspot without information from using one of the online
hotspot locaters? One solution is to use a wireless signal meter that shows when you have
moved into a hotspot coverage area and also tells you the strength of the signal. In this
project you will download and install a pro-gram to find a wireless signal.

Procedure:
1. Use your Web browser to go to https://www.mitec.cz/netmet.html
Note: It is not unusual for Web sites to change the location of where files are stored. If the URL
above no longer functions then open a search engine and search for “ Network Meter”.

2. Under Download locate the link that contains the latest version of Network Meter
and click on it.
3. Follow the instructions to install this tool on your computer.
4. Under Monitor choose the wireless adapter in your laptop.
5. Switch between Transfer and Speed options and monitor the results.
6. Note that it gives detailed information about your wireless network. Which details
do you find helpful?

3
For me, I found that the details found within the speed option is very much
helpful since it helps determine how powerful and general performance of
the wireless adapter installed within the PC. In the Network Meter itself, it
was showing how much download and upload speed within a specific
session totals given alongside the timestamp of the value of each wave.

7. Close all windows.
