Conditionals

We use the third conditional to talk about hypothetical past situations.

We express the condition with if + past perfect and the result with would/wouldn't +
have + past participle.
To express possibility or uncertainty, we can use could, might or may have + past
participle.
We can invert the past perfect verb form (i.e. like in a question) and omit if.

Some situations require us to mix zero, first, second and third conditionals.

Present Past

Past Present

Past Future

We can also form mixed conditional sentences using modal verbs and modal perfect forms
instead of will or would (have).
