Oil distribution
The oil, which before the first activation of the air conditioning system was located in the AC compressor's oil pan, is distributed as follows in the refrigerant circuit:
♦ AC compressor approx. 50 %
♦ Capacitor approx. 10 %
♦ Evaporator approx. 20 %

– Unscrew bolts -1-.
– Push out the refrigerant line -2- from bracket -4- in the capac‐
itor.
Note
After disconnecting, shut off the refrigerant lines and the capacitor
connections with suitable caps to protect them from penetration
of ambient humidity.
Connect
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:

the capacitor.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:

♦ Open the airtight sealed delivery bag with the desiccator bag
just before inserting the desiccator cartridge in the fluid reser‐
voir and close it immediately afterwards with the screw plug
-1-.
♦ Before installing, check the fluid reservoir - for contamination,
damage of the threads, sealing surfaces.
– Insert a new strainer into the reservoir and then insert a new
desiccator bag.
– Replace the screw cap -1- with the relevant gasket. Slightly
moisten the gasket of the screw cap with refrigerant oil before
installing.
Pay attention to the correct fit of the gasket in the screw cap -1-.
– Insert Seeger ring -arrow-.

If the refrigerant circuit is not opened within 10 minutes after
draining it off, pressure can arise in the refrigerant circuit due
to the post-evaporation.
Evacuate the refrigerant and then open the refrigerant circuit
immediately.
Removing

Before removing the heater element for additional air heating
- Z35- , allow it to cool down.
Left-hand drive:
– Remove knee airbag ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 69 ; Knee airbags .
Right-hand drive.
– Release screws -2- and remove shield -1-.
– Remove glove compartment and glove compartment frame
from the dash panel on the front passenger side ⇒ General
body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments/covers;
Removing and installing glove compartment .
All vehicles:
– Remove left footwell vent ⇒ “6 Air deflector”, page 95 .
– With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap ⇒
Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and
connecting battery .
– Push the heater element for additional air heating - Z35- Pos.
-4- out of the heating and air conditioning unit.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:

observe the tightening torque of the nuts -1-.

– Swivel out straps arrows -A- and glove compartment -1- in the
direction of arrow -B-.
– When swinging out, loosen the compartment brake element.
Caution
– Press the locking tabs in direction of arrow -A- and remove the
cover -1-.
– Slide the -1- cover plate - T10532- under the pollen filter.

– Hook the cover -1- into the dust and pollen filter -2-, arrow
-B-.
Caution
– Carefully pull the dust and pollen filter -2- in direction of arrow
-C- out of the installation channel; the cover plate - T10532-
remains in place.
– Remove any dirt and leaves from the cover plate with a stand‐
ard commercial vacuum cleaner.
– After removing all dirt, remove the cover plate from the instal‐
lation channel.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:

– Pay attention to the fitting position of the dust and pollen filter.

– Check connections -2- and -3- for damage or contamination.
– Clean sealing surface for gasket rings and smoothen.
– Moisten new gasket rings -4- with coolant (or grease slightly
with silicone grease) and fit onto the coolant pipe -1-.
– Carefully slide the heat exchanger fully into the heating and
air conditioning unit.
– Slide the coolant pipes -1- and -4- into the heat exchanger as
far as they can go.

Note
Refrigerant lines must not rest against the air distributor housing
or other components.

– Inspect condensation water drain hose for continuity, clean if
necessary.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:
– The condensate drain hose -5- can only be pushed correctly
until they stop on the heating and air conditioning unit in one
position -1-.
• The peg -arrow- at the connection fitting must grip into the
guide -2-.
• If a commercially available cable clamp -3- for fixing around
the condensation water drain hose -5- was installed, it must
be replaced.
• Condensate drain hose -5- must be guided below the wiring
harness of the Control unit for airbag - J234- -6- as shown in
the figure.
– Fit condensate drain hose -5- in the body cutout until you hear
an audible click.

Note
If the vehicle is not equipped with a rear centre vent, a cover -1-
must be fitted to the vent of the heating and air conditioning unit.
The cover is removed in direction of arrow -A-.
– Swivel out the air guide -2- towards the top in direction of arrow
-B-, hook out of the heating and air conditioning unit in direction
of arrow -C- and remove.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order.

– Loosen the cover -2- out of the latches Arrows -A- and remove
from the ventilation -1- in the direction of arrow -B-.

– First of all tighten the outer nut, then the one on the opposite
side and at last the middle one.

Fixing nuts for ventilation grid 3 Nm

Note
If a new control and display unit with air conditioning system con‐
trol unit - J301- is installed, the ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester must
be connected and the function “Replace control unit” of the rele‐
vant control unit and the function “AC compressor run-in” must be
performed in targeted fault finding or in the targeted functions.

Removing
– Push out the bottom cover -1- under the operating and display
unit towards you and remove it.
– Remove cover trim panel for centre dash panel ⇒ Bodywork
- interior assembly work; Rep. gr. 70 ; Dash panel .

Note
If a new control and display unit with air conditioning system con‐
trol unit - J301- is installed, the ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester must
be connected and the function “Replace control unit” of the rele‐
vant control unit and the function “AC compressor run-in” must be
performed in targeted fault finding or in the targeted functions.

Caution
When using the lever tool, mask points where the lever tool is
applied using commercially available adhesive tape.

The diagnosis is carried out via the onboard supply control unit -
J519- with ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

assembly wedge -3409- .

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:
When installing, pay attention to the correct seating of the sealing
ring -2-, replace ring if damaged.

– Switch off the ignition and all electrical components.
– Remove the footwell vent on the driver's side
⇒ “6.2 Removing and installing the footwell vent on the driver's
side”, page 98 .
– Detach encode r-2- by swinging it out of the detents
-arrows-.
– Push out the sender and disconnect the plug -1-.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, pay attention to the
following points:
– Press the sender into the assembly opening until the catches
are locked.
