2.1.1 Safety Precautions for Turning Off the

Voltage in the High Voltage System
• The high voltage system may only be turned off by a qualified
person (Audi high voltage technician) . Definition and explan‐
ation of the qualifications. Refer to ⇒ Electrical Equipment
Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System General Warnings .
• Before beginning any work on high voltage systems, the high
voltage system must be de-energized. Refer to ⇒ Electrical
Equipment Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System, De-
Energizing .
• Refer to the individual repair procedure on how to turn of the
high voltage system. For more information regarding how to
turn off the high voltage system. Refer to ⇒ Electrical Equip‐
ment Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System General
Warnings .
• Always follow all additional warnings and descriptions when
working on the high voltage system. Refer to ⇒ Electrical
Equipment Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System Gen‐
eral Warnings .
Note
For concerns or questions about the concepts see persons with

“special training in electrical systems”, “Audi high voltage techni‐
cians”, “Audi subject specialists for work on high voltage systems”
or speak with the corresponding importer about questions before
beginning any work on the high voltage system.
For Work Which Requires The Voltage to be Turned Off.

Disabling the high voltage system can only be done using the
Guided Fault Finding on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester .

DANGER!
Hazardous high voltage

Severe bodily injury or death by electrocution.
♦ The high voltage system may only be turned off by a quali‐
fied person (Audi high voltage technician) .
♦ It must be certain that the voltage for the high voltage sys‐
tem is turned off. The voltage is guaranteed to be off
exclusively with the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester via the “Gui‐
ded Fault Finding”.
♦ The qualified technician (Audi high voltage technician) will
make sure the voltage is turned off and that the system
cannot turn back on again using a Service Disconnect
Lock - T40262- . The qualified technician should make
sure the system cannot turn on again by keeping the key
and the High Voltage System Maintenance Connector -
TW- in a safe place.
♦ The qualified personnel (Audi high voltage technicians)
mark the vehicle with a label.
2.1.2 Safety Precautions when Restarting the
High Voltage System
• The high voltage system may only be restarted by a qualified
person (Audi high voltage technician). Definition and explan‐
ation of the qualifications. Refer to ⇒ Electrical Equipment
Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System General Warnings .
• High voltage system, energizing. Refer to ⇒ Electrical Equip‐

Note

Restarting the high voltage system must be performed only by

using Guided Fault Finding on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester .

DANGER!

♦ The high voltage system may only be restarted by a quali‐
fied person (Audi high voltage technician).
♦ Use only the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in “Guided Fault
Finding ” to ensure the system has been re-energized.
♦ Qualified personnel (Audi high voltage technician) restart
the vehicle.

Note


Visually Inspect the High Voltage Components When Working

Near High Voltage Components.
DANGER!
High voltage components have hazardous voltage.

Note the following when working near high voltage compo‐
nents and high voltage cables:
♦ Cutting, deformed, and sharp edged tools or heat sources
such as welding, solder, hot air and thermal glue are for‐
bidden.
♦ Visually inspect the work area before working on high volt‐
age components.
♦ Perform a visual inspection of the Electric Drive Power
And Control Electronics - JX1- , the Electro-Drive Drive
Motor - V141- , the Electrical A/C Compressor - V470- and
the high voltage lines when working in the engine com‐
partment.
♦ Visually permitted
inspect the high voltage cables and the covers
when working on the underbody.

♦ Visually inspect the high voltage cables, the electronics

TW - , when working in the luggage compartment.
♦ Visually inspect all potential equalization cables.
Observe the following when performing the visual inspection:
♦ None of the components appear to have any external
damage.
♦ The high voltage cable insulation and the potential equal‐
ization cable insulation are not damaged.
♦ The high voltage cables must not have any unusual de‐
formations.
♦ Each high voltage component must be marked with a red
warning label.
For work during which the ignition must be switched on
DANGER!
When working on vehicles with the ignition already switched

on or that are ready to drive there is a danger of the engine
starting unexpectedly and of being poisoned by gas in en‐
closed areas. Risk of body parts and/or clothing being clamped
or pulled.
Perform the following before switching on the ignition:
♦ Move the selector lever into P.
♦ Activate the parking brake
♦ Turn off the ignition.
♦ Open the hood
♦ Connect Battery Charger - VAS5095A- to the battery jump
start terminal.
♦ Turn on the ignition.
General Safety Precautions and Work Safety Precautions When

Working on Vehicles on Which the Ignition Must Be Not Switched
on
WARNING
The engine could start unexpectedly.

For general work performed on the high voltage system the
ignition must be switched off and the key must be kept outside
of the vehicle interior.
WARNING
Handling the high voltage cables:

• Do not stand on or place tools on the high voltage cables
or their components. This may damage the insulation.
• Do not bend or kink high voltage cables as this may dam‐
age the insulation.
• The round high voltage connectors are color coded with
an exterior colored ring and mechanically coded with
guide or code tabs. Observe the coding when connecting
the round high voltage connector in order to avoid me‐
chanical damage to the high voltage connector.
2.2 Start/Stop System Safety Precautions

Pay attention to the following when working on a vehicle with
Stop/Start system:
WARNING
There is a risk of injury if the engine starts automatically in ve‐

hicles with the Start/Stop System.
♦ For vehicles with an activated Start/Stop System (recog‐
nizable from a notification in the instrument cluster), the
motor can be started automatically if needed.
♦ Make sure that the start/stop system is deactivated when
working on the vehicle (turn off the ignition, turn on the
ignition when necessary).

2.3 Road Test with Testing Equipment

Safety Precautions
If Testing Equipment Must Be Used During a Road Test, Observe
The Following:
WARNING
Distraction and testing equipment that is not secured properly

can cause accidents.
The passenger airbag could pose a risk if it deploys in a colli‐
sion.
• Operating testing equipment while driving is a distraction.
• Testing equipment that is not secured probably increases
the risk of injury.
♦ Always secure testing equipment on the rear seat using a
strap and have a second person in the rear seat operating
it.
2.4 Subframe Safety Precautions

Caution
The suspension components could be damaged.

♦ Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe
mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are
not installed correctly.
♦ Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or the sub‐
frame crossbrace, for example, by a floor jack or similar
device.
2.5 Towing and Tow Starting Safety Pre‐

cautions
Caution
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

♦ When towing the vehicle, move the selector lever into “N”.
Do not tow the vehicle further than 50 km (31 miles) and
do not drive faster than 50 km/h (31 mph).
Note

3.1 Clean Working Conditions

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Engine Bung Set - VAS6122-
♦ Always clean the connection locations and the area around
them before loosening.
♦ Clean the transmission and transmission components using
Cleaning Solution - D 009 401 04- .
♦ Use lint-free cloths when cleaning, for example, the “WYPALL
X70/WORKHORSE” cloth made by Kimberly-Clark Professio‐
nal.
♦ Seal all open lines and connections immediately with clean
plugs or caps from the -VAS6122- .
♦ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them. Use
foil or lint-free cloths.
♦ Cover or plug unpacked components if repairs cannot be per‐
formed immediately.
♦ Only install clean components: Remove the replacement parts
from their packaging just prior to installing them.
♦ Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture
and only connect when they are dry.

stead.
♦ Acceleration in 1st gear is controlled with the B clutch in the
transmission. This is also known as “drive clutch B”.
♦ The decoupler in Electro-Drive Drive Motor - V141- separates
the internal combustion engine from the Electro-Drive Drive
Motor - V141- . The decoupler is also described as “decoupler
F” or just “clutch F”.
Mechatronic
The Mechatronic combines the following components as a com‐
plete synchronized unit:
♦ Transmission Control Module - J217- hydraulic control
♦ the sensors and actuators
The Mechatronic unit is installed in the transmission in the area
of the ATF pan.

Transmission Control Module - J217-

The control module is a part of the Mechatronic unit in the trans‐
mission.
Determining the driving situation and driving resistance depend‐
ent shift point occurs automatically.

Shift Point Changes on Inclines and Declines
When driving on inclines or declines, gears are automatically se‐
lected using additional shift characteristic maps. The selection is
based on accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed.
♦ The gear change map for extreme uphill stretches is matched
to engine output
♦ The gear change map for extreme downhill stretches is match‐
ed to the braking effect of the engine.
♦ By selecting a gear directly using tiptronic, the driver can use
the engine braking effect with a specific gear engaged, for ex‐
ample when driving downhill with a trailer.
3.3 General Repair Information

Carefulness, cleanliness and the correct tools are required for
transmission repairs to be successful. The usual basic safety pre‐
cautions also, naturally apply when carrying out vehicle repairs.
Some general repair information that applies to several proce‐
dures throughout this manual is summarized here. They apply to
this repair manual.
Guided Fault Finding, On Board Diagnostics (OBD) and Test In‐
struments
♦ Before servicing the transmission, determine as best as pos‐
sible the cause of the fault using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
in the mode Guided Fault Finding , Vehicle Self-Diag-
nosis and Test Instruments .
Oil, Environment and Disposal Regulations

♦ Handle ATF, axle oil and other fluids with care.
♦ Dispose of the drained fluids properly.
♦ Follow all environment and disposal regulations.
♦ Be sure to read the instructions on the fluid containers.

Transmission
♦ Follow the rules for clean working conditions when working on
the transmission. Refer to
⇒ “3.1 Clean Working Conditions”, page 8 .
♦ Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle when the center dif‐
ferential housing is removed or when there is no ATF.
♦ After installing, the following fluid levels must be checked and
topped off if necessary: ATF in transmission. Refer to
⇒ “8.1 ATF Level, Checking”, page 79 and gear oil in trans‐
mission. Refer to
⇒ “3.2 Gear Oil, Checking Level”, page 131 . For the correct
capacities. Refer to ⇒ “4.1 Capacities”, page 12 and speci‐
fication. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
O-rings, Seals and Gaskets
♦ Always replace the O-rings, seals and gaskets.
♦ After removing gaskets, examine contact surface on housing/
shaft for burr resulting from removal or for other signs of dam‐
age.
♦ Clean the housing separating surface thoroughly before as‐
sembling.
♦ To install, thinly coat shaft seals along outer circumference
and on sealing lip with ATF.
♦ Coat O-rings with ATF before inserting to prevent crushing
rings during installation.

♦ Always only use approved ATF. Other types of lubrication

cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
♦ The open side on the shaft seals faces the fluid to be sealed
off.
♦ Press in new shaft seal, so that the sealing lip does not run on
the same point as the sealing lip of the old shaft seal (use
insertion depth tolerances).
♦ After installing, the following fluid levels must be checked and
topped off if necessary: ATF in transmission. Refer to
⇒ “8.1 ATF Level, Checking”, page 79 or gear oil in trans‐
mission. Refer to
⇒ “3.2 Gear Oil, Checking Level”, page 131 . For the correct
capacities. Refer to ⇒ “4.1 Capacities”, page 12 and speci‐
fication. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Bolts and Nuts
♦ Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
♦ Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be
tightened in steps according to the specified tightening se‐
quence and method.
♦ Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be
loosened and tightened crosswise in stages if no tightening
sequence is specified.
♦ Replace the self-locking nuts and bolts.
♦ Use a wire brush to clean the threads of bolts that were
screwed in with locking compound. Install the bolts with Lock‐
ing Fluid - AMV185101A1- .
♦ If self-locking bolts were installed or if regular bolts were in‐
stalled with locking fluid, then the threaded holes must be
cleaned, for example with a thread tap. If the holes are not
cleaned, then the bolts could break off the next time they are
removed.

♦ The tightening specifications stated apply to non-oiled nuts

and bolts.
Fasteners
♦ Do not overstretch the circlips.
♦ Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
♦ The circlips must fit completely inside the groove.
Bearings
♦ Install needle bearings with lettered side (thicker metal) facing
the fitting tool.
♦ Insert bearing with axle oil or ATF, depending on installation
location.
♦ Do Protected
not interchange the outer or inner races for the same size

♦ Always replace the tapered roller bearings on one shaft to‐
gether and use new bearings from a single manufacturer.
Adjusting Shims
♦ Measure the adjusting shims at several locations with a mi‐
crometer. Tolerance variations make it possible to find the
exact shim thickness required.
♦ Check for burrs and damage. Only install perfect shims.
3.4 Contact Corrosion

Contact corrosion can occur if incorrect fasteners (bolts, nuts,
washers, etc.) are used.
For this reason, only fasteners with a special surface coating may
be installed.
In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of ma‐
terials that do not conduct electricity.
If there are doubts about whether parts can be used or not, then
use new parts. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Note
♦ Only original replacement parts are recommended, they are

checked and compatible with aluminum.
♦ The use of Audi accessories is recommended.
♦ Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by the
warranty.
3.5 Wire Routing and Securing

♦ Mark the individual fuel, and vacuum lines for the Evaporative
Emission (EVAP) canister system as well as the electrical
wires before disconnecting and/or removing them. This will
prevent a mix-up when reconnecting them. If necessary, draw
sketches or take pictures.
♦ Due to the limited space inside the engine compartment, be
especially careful when working near moving or hot parts to
avoid damaging the lines.

2.4 Emergency Release from P
Note
♦ The selector lever will not move out of “P” if the battery is dis‐
connected or is discharged. The vehicle cannot be moved or
towed.
♦ The Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- will cancel out the lock when
the emergency release is activated.
Procedure
Note
The handle on the selector lever is not shown in the illustration. It
is not necessary to remove the handle in order to unlock the se‐
lector mechanism when it is in “P”.
– Remove the front ashtray insert, if equipped.

– Open the cap -1- inside the ashtray housing with a screwdriver
in direction of -arrow-.
– Press the cylinder in direction of -arrow- on the Shift Lock Sol‐

enoid - N110- , for example using the screwdriver from the
vehicle tool kit, through the center opening in the ashtray
housing and at the same time, shift the selector lever out of
“P” while pressing the button on the selector lever.
Note
♦ This unlocks the locking lever -1- when the selector lever is in
“P”.
♦ If the cylinder -arrow- on the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- is
covered by insulation or a wire, then move the insulation or the
wire to the side.
2.5 Selector Lever Handle, Removing and

Installing
♦ Trim Removal Wedge - 3409-
Use a cable tie or the assembly aid for the handle button. The
assembly aid comes pre-installed from the factory if a new handle
is ordered.

– Move the selector lever into “N”.
Note
Both the selector lever handle and the selector lever boot are re‐
moved.
– Carefully pry out the selector lever boot on the side using the
-3409- in direction of -arrows-.

– Remove the locking button from the selector lever handle in

direction of -arrow- and secure it with a cable tie -A- or an as‐
sembly aid -B-, as illustrated.
Note
The assembly aid -B- is already installed at the factory when a

new handle is ordered. Remove the assembly aid only after the
new handle is installed. The assembly aid can be used again as
an assist tool.
– Fold the selector lever boot -2- upward and over the selector
lever handle -3-.
– Turn the locking ring all the way in direction of -arrow-. The
markings -a and b- no longer line up.
– Remove the selector lever handle and selector lever boot
without touching the locking button -1-.
Installing
If the locking button was not properly secured when the handle
was being removed and it falls back inside the handle, then it must
be pulled out and secured again:
• In order to install the selector lever handle, the locking button
must be pulled out all the way and secured either with a cable
tie -A- or with the assembly tool -B- supplied with a new handle.
– Tape an adhesive pad or two-sided tape -2- to the locking but‐
ton -1-.
Note
♦ As an alternative, use a 15 mm suction cup.

♦ Remove the adhesive pad or the two-sided tape after the han‐
dle has been installed. Make sure there is no adhesive left
over.
– Push on the adhesive surface using a tool -3- with a clean, flat
surface as illustrated and pull out the locking button in direction
of -arrow-.
– Secure the pulled-out locking button with a cable tie -A- or an
assembly tool -B- as illustrated.
– Remove the adhesive pad or the two-sided tape -2- and clean
the locking button -1-.
– Move the selector lever into “N”.
– Fold the selector lever boot -2- upward and over the selector
lever handle -3-.

Pull on the rod -4- to move the selector lever.
– Turn the locking ringbyall

Caution
Danger of causing damage to the selector lever handle.

The locking ring can be turned only when the handle is installed
completely.
– Remove cable ties or assembly tools. The locking button

mechanism will engage in the vertical groove on the selector
lever. If necessary, press the locking button into the selector
lever handle.
– Move the button mechanism through “R” and “S” to perform
the function test.
• If the selector lever positions cannot be reached, remove the
handle again. Refer to
⇒ “2.5 Selector Lever Handle, Removing and Installing”, page
22 .
– Pull the selector lever boot downward and attach it to the Mul‐
timedia System Control Head - E380- .

mechanism and loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable
approximately one turn.
– Disconnect the connectors -2 and 4-.

– Remove the insulation mat over the shift mechanism.
– Remove the bolts -1, 3, 5 and 6-.

♦ The illustration does not show the insulation mat.

♦ A second technician is needed to remove the shift mechanism
under the vehicle.
♦ Ignore -arrows-.
– Remove the lock washers -1-, (if equipped).

– Pull the noise insulation -2- off the selector mechanism func‐
tion unit -4- and push it forward toward the selector lever cable
-3-.

– Remove the selector lever cable clip -1- sideways.

– Remove the selector lever cable -2- from the selector mech‐
anism.
Note
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
– Remove the selector mechanism function unit.

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
– Install the selector mechanism function unit and tighten it from
the top.

1. Selector Mechanism Functionality Test
• Never operate the starter when the selector lever is in “R”, “D/
S” and the “tiptronic gate”.
• If selector lever position “N” is selected at speeds greater than
5 km/h, the shift lock solenoid must not engage and block the
selector lever. The selector lever can be moved into a another
gear.
• For speeds below 2 km/h (almost standstill) and shifting into
selector lever position “N”, the shift lock solenoid must only
engage after approximately 1 second. The selector lever can
be moved out of “N” only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Selector lever in “P”:
– Press the button on the electro-mechanical parking

– Turn off the ignition.

• Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position

• Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position

The Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- locks the selector lever.
– Press the brake pedal and hold it down.
• The Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- unlocks the selector lever. It
is possible to shift into a gear. Press the button in the selector
lever handle and slowly move the selector lever from “P” and
through “R, N, D, S”. While doing this, make sure the Trans‐
mission Range Display - Y6- inside the instrument cluster
matches the actual position of the selector lever.
– Pull the selector lever toward the rear out of “D/S” and then
release it again.
• The selector lever moves automatically back into “D/S”. The
Transmission Range Display - Y6- must change from “D” to
“S1” in the instrument cluster and then go back to “D” after
pulling the lever toward the rear.
The selector lever is in “N” and the ignition is turned on:
– Do not press the brake pedal.
• After a short waiting period: The selector lever is locked and
cannot be moved out of “N” position despite pressing locking
button on selector lever handle. The Shift Lock Solenoid -
N110- locks the selector lever.
– Press the brake pedal.
• The Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- unlocks the selector lever. It
is possible to shift into “D/S”.
The selector lever is in “D/S” and the ignition is on:

– Move the selector lever into the “tiptronic gate”.

• The “D/S” in the Selector Lever Transmission Range Position
Display Unit - Y26- must turn off and the “+” and “–” must turn
on.
• The Transmission Range Display - Y6- inside the instrument
cluster must change from “D” to “M1” when the selector lever
moves into the “tiptronic gate”
– Do not move the selector lever into “P” but rather, for example,
into “N”.
• A warning message must appear in the instrument cluster.
• The vehicle cannot be locked.
– Move the selector lever into “P”.
• The vehicle can be locked.
If the specified values are not obtained:
– Perform Guided Fault Finding using the Vehicle Diagnos‐
tic Tester .

2. Selector Lever Handle Locking Button, Checking
Make sure locking button moves easily.
• It must be possible to press the locking button without using
great force.
• After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back
out by itself.
– Make sure the selector lever handle is installed correctly. Re‐

– Make sure the selector lever is not bent.
Functional check:
• Ignition switched on.
The locking button on the selector lever handle must be pressed
for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot
be shifted into the specified position.
♦ Move the selector lever from “P” into “R” and press the brake
pedal at the same time.
♦ “N” into “R”; stationary, press the brake pedal after waiting
longer

– Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. Refer to ⇒ Body Exte‐

– If equipped, remove the bolts -arrows-, then remove the heat

shield.
– Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from
the selector shaft lever using the -80-200- .
– Press the securing clips -2- off and remove the selector lever
cable from the transmission.

– Remove the four lock washers -1-.

– Remove the noise insulation -2- and slide it forward.
– Remove the selector lever cable clip -1- sideways.

– Remove the selector lever cable -2- from the selector mech‐
anism.
Installing
Note
♦ Replace the lock washers.

♦ Replace the O-ring on the selector lever cable.
♦ Lubricate the cable eye and the ball socket on the selector
lever cable with Polycarbamide Grease - G 052 142 A2- before
installing.

– Slide the noise insulation -2- over the opening on the selector
lever cable -3-.
– Insert the O-ring -1- on the selector lever cable.

– Install the selector lever cable -2- into the gearshift mechanism
function unit in direction of -arrow-.
– Secure the selector lever cable with a clip -3-.
• Installed position: The angled end of the clip -1- faces the shift
mechanism.
– Install the noise insulation -2- with four new lock washers -1-.
– Push the selector lever -1- on the transmission all the way to
the back in direction of -arrow- until the parking lock locks into
place.
• When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn
the front wheels.
– Press the selector shaft lever forward three detents so the
transmission is in “D”.
– Make sure the selector lever inside the vehicle is also in “D”.
– Carefully press the selector lever cable ball socket -1- in this
position onto the selector shaft lever.
– Secure the selector lever cable using a clip -2-.

♦ Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

♦ Do not bend selector shaft lever when pressing on, otherwise
shift mechanism can no longer be adjusted exactly.

Caution
The shift mechanism can be destroyed by broken clips, tabs

or other objects.
♦ Make sure no components or other objects fall into the

if that happens.
– Open the retaining tabs -2 and 3- in the direction of -arrows-,

slightly raise the front of the sealing cap -A- and hold it in that
position.
Note
This prevents the retaining tabs from engaging again.
– Open the upper tab -1- in direction of -arrow- above the bracket
-B- and remove the cap -A-.
– Disconnect the connector on the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- .
– Push the hook -A- in direction of -arrow- and hold it in this

position.
Note
Replace the selector mechanism function unit if any of the hooks

-A- are broken off.
– Tilt the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- in the direction of the

-arrow- so that the ball rod -1- comes out of the lever on the
selector mechanism.
– Remove the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- .

– Turn the ball rod -1- into the correct installed position.

if necessary.
– Attach the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- to the hook -A-.

– Position the cover -A- over the Shift Lock Solenoid - N110- and
carefully lock it in -1 through 3-.

– Check the shift mechanism function before completing as‐

Transmission, Removing
Follow all safety precautions. Refer to

• The electro-mechanical parking brake is opened
• Move the selector lever into “D/S”.
– Position the front wheels so they are straight.
Disabling the Voltage on the High Voltage System
WARNING
Follow the High Voltage System General Warnings. Refer to

⇒ Electrical System Hybrid; Rep. Gr. 93 ; High Voltage System
General Warnings .
Turning off the voltage in the high voltage system is carried out
exclusively via the Guided Fault Finding on the Vehicle Di‐
agnostic Tester .
DANGER!

Severe bodily injury or death by electrocution.
♦ The high voltage system may only be turned off by a quali‐
fied person (Audi high voltage technician) .
♦ It must be certain that the voltage for the high voltage sys‐
tem is turned off. The voltage is guaranteed to be off
exclusively with the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester via the “Gui‐
ded Fault Finding”.
♦ The qualified technician (Audi high voltage technician) will
cannot turn back on again using a Service Disconnect
Lock - T40262- . The qualified technician should make
sure the system cannot turn on again by keeping the key
TW- in a safe place.

ling the transmission.
– When installing a replacement transmission: Install the trans‐

– Install the cable bracket on the new transmission if it is not

– The following preparations must be made before connecting

the engine and transmission:
– Turn the Electro-Drive Drive Motor - V141- so that the hole
next to the notch -arrow- is visible inside the transmission
housing in the lower opening, as illustrated.
Note
If the notch is present only once, turn the Electro-Drive Drive Mo‐
tor - V141- .
– Insert the -T40170- in the transmission housing from below

and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.
– Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/

transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they
are not.
– Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the
transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them,
if necessary. Refer to ⇒ page 65 .

– Coat locking piece -1- with lubricant.
– Bring the starter -1- with the locking piece -2- into the installed
position -3- by supporting the starter on the engine bracket
using a plastic or rubber wedge -4-.
Note
In this assembly overview pay attention, that the locking piece are
in the correct installed position with the starter, if not the starter
support bolts are difficult to install and the locking piece will no
longer have its sealing capability.
– Install the upper starter bolt -2- in the transmission.

– Install spacer sleeve -arrow- on the bolt -2-.
– Position the transmission on the engine and tighten the bolts

-6 through 11-.
– Fasten the starter with the bolts -1 and 2- while doing this make
sure the locking piece fits correctly.
– Remove the -T40170- .

– Raise the transmission and tighten the tunnel crossmember

bolts -arrows-. Refer to
⇒ “4.1 Overview - Subframe Mount”, page 66 .
– Loosen the tensioning strap and guide the -VAS6931- with the
- T40173- under the transmission.
– Push the Electro-Drive Drive Motor - V141- against the engine
drive plate a little bit.
– Tighten the Electro-Drive Drive Motor - V141- to the drive plate

as follows:
– Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).
– Turn the crankshaft on the vibration damper 240° in the direc‐

tion of the engine rotation -arrow- with a large offset open-end
wrench -1-.
Note
Use the -VAG1332/14- to tighten the bolts.
– Tighten the accessible bolts -arrow- in thispermitted
crankshaft position
to the tightening specification. Refer to ⇒ Electrical System

– Continue turning the crankshaft 120° and tighten the remain‐

ATF Level, Checking and Correcting
Caution

♦ The 0BW automatic transmission is overfilled with a small
amount of ATF at the factory.
♦ It will run out when the plug for the ATF check and fill hole
is opened and it must be refilled.


– Start the engine in “P”.
Note
♦ Start the engine, when all required aids are prepared because
the ATF temperature quickly rises, and because of this the
ATF level test cannot be performed.
♦ The vehicle is a hybrid vehicle. The combustion engine must
be running to check the ATF level. Activate the »Kick-down«
on the accelerator pedal module or open the hood in order to
start the internal combustion engine.
– While depressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling,
shift through all the selector lever positions “P”, “R”, “N”, “D/S”
leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.
– Move the selector lever to “P”.
– Run the engine at idle.
WARNING
There is a risk of injury.

♦ Wear protective eyewear.
♦ Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

– When the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the plug

-arrow A- and drain any excess ATF.
• A small amount of fluid should drip out of the ATF check and
fill hole -arrow A- when the temperature is at 35 ° to 45 °C (95
° to 113 °F) (hot climate countries maximum 50 °C (122 °F))
(this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up).
• If no ATF drip out, fill the ATF. Refer to

♦ Fill some ATF at a temperature of 40 °C (104 °F) to prevent

that the test must be repeated with the ATF level to low, cooling
the transmission to the test temperature is a requirement.
♦ The ATF check and fill hole must be sealed off again before
the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) maximum for
hot climate countries).
♦ Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
– Tighten the new plug -A- for the ATF check and fill hole.
Caution

♦ The 0BW automatic transmission is overfilled with a small
amount of ATF at the factory.
♦ It will run out when the plug for the ATF check and fill hole
is opened and it must be refilled.
– Turn off the engine.

– Remove the fill hole plug -1- and add 360 ml ± 10 ml (12.17 ±
0.338 oz) ATF using the - VAS6617- .
– Install and tighten the plug -1-.

Draining
Note
The transmission should be at operating temperature to properly

drain the ATF. Do not start the engine when there is either very
little or no ATF in the transmission.
• The engine is off.

• Transmission is in “P”.

WARNING
There is a risk of injury.

♦ Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.
– Remove the ATF drain plug -arrow B- and drain the ATF.
Note
♦ Follow the disposal requirements.

♦ Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.
– Tighten the new drain plug -arrow B-.
Caution

♦ Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the
automatic transmission 0BW.
♦ Allocation. Refer to Parts Catalog. Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
♦ Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission
failure.
♦ The ATF filler tool must be clean. Do not mix the ATF with
any other ATF types.
♦ Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no
ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after signif‐
icant ATF loss.
Filling ATF
– Tighten the new plug -arrow A-.
– Shake the ATF-container before opening.
– Screw the 1 liter ATF container on the -VAS6262A- . For the
part number. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Note
Use the -VAS6262/6- if the thread on the ATF-container does not

fit on the -VAS6262A- .
– Secure the ATF bottle with the -VAS6262A- on the vehicle as

high as possible.

– Install the -VAS6262/5- into the ATF check and fill hole
-arrow-.
– Fill the ATF using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out
of the check and fill hole.
– Start the engine, wait 20 seconds and then turn it off.
– Fill the ATF again until it starts to leak out of the hole.
– Start the engine.
– Fill the ATF again using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak
out of the check and fill hole.
– Tighten the old plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
– While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift
through all the selector lever positions (“P”, “R”, “N”, “D/S”)
leaving each position engaged for 3 seconds.
– Turn off the engine.
– Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to
Note
Observe all notes and test requirements for “Checking ATF level
and correcting”.

V475- -A- from the transmission housing.
Note
The Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- fits

tightly into the transmission housing because of the O-ring -D-.
Installing

• Connect the connectors -2 and 3- for the wire -1- correctly in
the transmission housing.
Note
♦ Do not use connectors interchangeably.

♦ The wire -1- is portrayed here for a removed Mechatronic,

– Carefully and without any aids, replace the O-ring -D- on the
Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- .
Note
The Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- be

replaced if the O-ring seat is damaged or scratched.
– Insert the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -

V475- with a new O-ring -D-.
– Tighten the bolt in the following sequence: -1 to 3-.
– Connect the connector -B- to the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary
Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- -A-.

♦ Mark the connectors -2 and 3- to the openings in the trans‐

mission housing before removing.
♦ When installing a new wiring harness -1-, position these mark‐
ings accordingly.
Caution
There is a risk of damaging the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary

Hydraulic Pump 1 - V475- connection.

V475- will be damaged if the connector terminals

♦ The mount -4- on the back must fit into the bolt -3- on the Me‐
chatronic in direction of -arrow-.
♦ The suction collar -5- on the ATF filter must inserted all the

– Tighten the three -T40199- hand-tight as illustrated.

– Mount the ATF pan with the new gasket on the transmission
over the -T40199- .
– Install the bolts -1 and 2- by hand until the bolt heads make

♦ Only the bolts with a T40 TORX® bolt head may be loos‐
ened.
♦ If other bolts are loosened, this may affect the function of
the Mechatronic unit or it may come apart.
– Remove the Mechatronic from the transmission.
Caution
Danger of damaging the sensor on the back side of the Me‐

chatronic.
♦ Lay the Mechatronic with the bolt head side facing down
only.
Installing
Note
Replace the Mechatronic O-rings and bolts.
– Install new O-rings -1 and 3- into the grooves in the oil pipes.
– Insert the ATF pipe -2- into the Mechatronic.
– Check the oil pipes for damage and make sure they fit securely
inside the Mechatronic.

– Remove the sealing sleeve using the -T10271- and install a

new sleeve.
– Install the four -T40199- hand-tight, as illustrated.
Note
♦ The -T40199- prevent the Mechatronic from tilting when it is

being installed. Also, the oil pipes on the back of the Mecha‐
tronic will not get damaged.
♦ The spring clip on the back of the Mechatronic prevents the
Mechatronic from being mounted flush on the transmission
housing.
♦ It is recommended to have a second technician help when in‐
stalling the Mechatronic.

4.2 General Description - Electric Drive Mo‐

tor
The Electric Drive Motor - V141- -1- is positioned between the
internal combustion engine and the transmission.
It directly affects the transmission output shaft and has the fol‐
lowing functions:
♦ Functions like engine, in that it electrically powers the vehicle.
♦ Functions like a generator, in that the network and the Electric
Vehicle Battery - A2- are charged with electricity.
♦ Functions as starter, in that it starts the internal combustion
engine.
The decoupler in Electric Drive Motor - V141- separates the in‐
ternal combustion engine from the Electric Drive Motor - V141- .
The decoupler is also described as “decoupler F” or just “clutch
F”.
The “decoupler F” in the Electric Drive Motor - V141- cannot be
replaced individually. It is not intended that the Electric Drive Mo‐
tor - V141- be opened and disassembled.
Acceleration in 1st gear is controlled with the B clutch in the trans‐
mission. This is also known as “drive clutch B”.

Setting


Conditions
The basic setting for the Electric Drive Motor - V141- must be
performed after the following conditions:
• If the Electric Drive Motor - V141- is replaced.
• If the transmission and Electric Drive Motor - V141- is re‐
placed.
• If the Electrical Drive Control Module - J841- is replaced. Refer

By performing the basic setting, the rotor position sensor in the

Electric Drive Motor - V141- is introduced and adapted.
Procedure
• All of the test conditions and procedures for the Vehicle Diag‐
nostic Tester must be performed exactly.
– Select the following menu options under Functions/Compo-
nent selection in Guided Fault Finding on the Vehicle Di‐
agnostic Tester :

As the Electric Drive Motor - V141- is a component of the trans‐
mission, the transmission must first be removed.

♦ The high-voltage system may only be turned off by quali‐
fied personnel (Audi high-voltage technician).
♦ It must be certain that the high-voltage system is de-ener‐
gized. The de-energized state is guaranteed only on the
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester via “Guided Fault Finding”.
♦ The qualified technician (Audi high-voltage technician) will
cannot turn back on again using a - T40262- . The qualified
technician should make sure the system cannot turn on
again by keeping the key and the High-Voltage System
Maintenance Connector - TW- in a safe place.
♦ The qualified personnel (Audi high-voltage technician)
marks the vehicle with a warning label.

Prepare the transport and lifting device:
– Assemble the -3368- with - VW771- with adapter 40 and M8

washer -1-.
• Maximum depth: Dimension X = 8 mm

If the -3368- with -VW771- and adapter 40 is screwed in deeper
than 8 mm, the damper module in the Electric Drive Motor -
V141- will be damaged.

– Attach the -3368- with the -VW771- with adapter 40 and M8

– Remove the bolts -2- on the Electric Drive Motor - V141- -1-.
– Carefully remove the Electric Drive Motor - V141- vertically out

of the transmission using the -VAS6100- .

– Make sure that no cold water drips into the opening for the

Test Conditions
• Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room tem‐
perature).
• Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work
• The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make
sure the oil settles internally.
• Check the gear oil level in the front final drive and in the trans‐
fer case. The gear oil level has been correctly adjusted only if
it is filled to both of the appropriate levels.

Cautions & Warnings
Please read these WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before proceeding with maintenance
and repair work. You must answer that you have read and you understand these
WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before you will be allowed to view this information.
•= If you lack the skills, tools and equipment, or a suitable workshop for any procedure described in
this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized Audi retailer or other qualified
shop. We especially urge you to consult an authorized Audi retailer before beginning repairs on
any vehicle that may still be covered wholly or in part by any of the extensive warranties issued by
Audi.
•= Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap)whenever you work on the fuel system or
the electrical system. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep an approved
fire extinguisher handy.
•= Audi is constantly improving its vehicles and sometimes these changes, both in parts and
specifications, are made applicable to earlier models. Therefore, part numbers listed in this
manual are for reference only. Always check with your authorized Audi retailer parts department
for the latest information.
•= Any time the battery has been disconnected on an automatic transmission vehicle, it will be
necessary to reestablish Transmission Control Module (TCM) basic settings using the VAG 1551
Scan Tool (ST).
•= Never work under a lifted vehicle unless it is solidly supported on stands designed for the purpose.
Do not support a vehicle on cinder blocks, hollow tiles or other props that may crumble under
continuous load. Never work under a vehicle that is supported solely by a jack. Never work under
the vehicle while the engine is running.
•= For vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, be sure of the correct radio activation code before
disconnecting the battery or removing the radio. If the wrong code is entered when the power is
restored, the radio may lock up and become inoperable, even if the correct code is used in a later
attempt.
•= If you are going to work under a vehicle on the ground, make sure that the ground is level. Block
the wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground
strap) to prevent others from starting the vehicle while you are under it.
•= Do not attempt to work on your vehicle if you do not feel well. You increase the danger of injury to
yourself and others if you are tired, upset or have taken medicine or any other substances that
may impair you or keep you from being fully alert.
•= Never run the engine unless the work area is well ventilated. Carbon monoxide (CO) kills.
•= Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or work
with acid. Wear goggles, gloves and other protective clothing whenever the job requires working
with harmful substances.
•= Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace when
you work near machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to get
caught in the machinery, severe injury could result.

Cautions & Warnings
•= Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are
designed to be used only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This
includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the
recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated, and
any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.
•= Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or
under the vehicle. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an
accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel or oil.
•= Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create
dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning withauthorised

•= Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running
machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.
•= Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand. Read
all the instructions thoroughly, do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to the work
and use only replacement parts meeting Audi specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and
procedures will not make good repairs.
•= Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or beverage
containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from
fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn
spontaneously.
•= Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these
tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten
fasteners to the tightening torque listed.
•= Keep sparks, lighted matches, and open flame away from the top of the battery. If escaping
hydrogen gas is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.
•= Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the proper
way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a stream, pond, or
lake. Consult local ordinances that govern the disposal of wastes.
•= The air-conditioning (A/C) system is filled with a chemical refrigerant that is hazardous. The A/C
system should be serviced only by trained automotive service technicians using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar with
regulations governing the discharging and disposal of automotive chemical refrigerants.
•= Before doing any electrical welding on vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), disconnect
the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module connector.
•= Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame. Excessive
heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.

•= When boost-charging the battery, first remove the fuses for the Engine Control Module (ECM), the
Transmission Control Module (TCM), the ABS control module, and the trip computer. In cases
where one or more of these components is not separately fused, disconnect the control module
connector(s).
•= Some of the vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system
(SRS), that automatically deploys an airbag in the event of a frontal impact. The airbag is operated
by an explosive device. Handled improperly or without adequate safeguards, it can be accidentally
activated and cause serious personal injury. To guard against personal injury or airbag system
failure, only trained Audi Service technicians should test, disassemble or service the airbag

boosting the battery a second time.
•= Never use a test light to conduct electrical tests of the airbag system. The system must only be
tested by trained Audi Service technicians using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) or an approved
equivalent. The airbag unit must never be electrically tested while it is not installed in the vehicle.
•= Some aerosol tire inflators are highly flammable. Be extremely cautious when repairing a tire that
may have been inflated using an aerosol tire inflator. Keep sparks, open flame or other sources of
ignition away from the tire repair area. Inflate and deflate the tire at least four times before
breaking the bead from the rim. Completely remove the tire from the rim before attempting any
repair.
•= When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle, never hold test equipment in your hands or
lap while the vehicle is in motion. Objects between you and the airbag can increase the risk of
injury in an accident.
