PRESENT

PARTICIPLE AS
ADJECTIVES
A participle that typically expresses present action in
relation to the time expressed by the finite verb in its
clause and that in English is formed with the suffix -
ing and is used in the formation of the progressive tenses

Present participles are -ing verb forms. They can be used


like adjectives, before a noun.
For instance:
That is a tiring trip. That is exciting news.
EXERCISE 1
Individual Exercise
• Read each definition below, and write each -ing form as an adjective, with a noun. Singular
count nouns need articles. Follow the examples.

1. a dog that is sleeping → a sleeping dog

2. information that excites you → exciting information

3. a dog that is barking 8. a team that is losing


4. weather that freezes you 9. a mother who is working
5. a dish for baking 10. a machine for washing
6. a story that frightens you 11. water that is running
7. a boy who is growing 12. a team that is winning
GROUP ASSINMENT
Now that you have done exercise 1, the followings are the instructions for Group
Assignment:
1. Make a group of 4 people
2. Each group should pick one of the phrases using present participle as
adjective in Exercise 1 (No 3 – 12). Please make sure that there’s no group
picking the same phrase.
3. Then, compose a paragraph consists of at least 8 sentences. The Noun
Phrase you picked from Exercise 1 is the topic of your paragraph.
4. The paragraph should also contains other uses of present participle as
adjectives. (At least, there five different present participles used in your
paragraph).
5. Submit your work via OASE. The due date will be on Wednesday, Sept 28th
2022 no later than 23.59 WITA. Please submit PDF file to the OASE.
