The deadliest war in history…
Benito Mussolini
After going through troubled school years, Benito Mussolini, as an adult,
moved to Austria-Hungary in 1909, wanting to become editor of a socialist
newspaper. However, he was later expelled back to his home country, Italy,
due to being accused of violating laws which were meant to balance press
freedom. A year later, in 1910, he became the editor for another socialist
newspaper but was yet again arrested for inciting violence. After all of this,
Mussolini finally decided to start his own newspaper after splitting from the
socialist party in 1914. He advocated violence just as anarchy spread across
the country.

After a job in the military, Benito Mussolini returned to newspapers. By the

year 1918, he called for a dictator to take control of Italy. Due to the pressure
from him and his followers, the government was forced to order the bondage
of outsiders they considered foes. After the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, he
gathered the distinct fascist into one national organization, going by the name
of Fasci Italiani di Combattimento. The Italian Fascist attracted war
experts and encouraged violence against socialists. Hence, Mussolini
prepared a stock of weapons in his newspaper offices.

By the year’s end, Mussolini stood in a general election as the Fascist

candidate, but he lost in a Socialist swing. He was arrested once more but
got released the next day. In 1921, the Italian King Victor Emmanuel III
broke up Parliament amongst violence and disorder. After the elections,
Mussolini became a deputy in Parliament. Soon, the party changed its
name to Partito Nazionale Fascista.

In the beginning, Mussolini disapproved of Adolf Hitler, but with more

time, their companionship grew more and more. Mussolini then approved
of anti-Semitic acts. He and Hitler joined sides with Francisco Franco in
the Spanish Civil War during 1936. By October of 1938, Germany and
Italy formed the Rome-Berlin Axis. Mussolini wrote an article in 1938
that aligned Italians and German concept of Aryan race. Mussolini then
called for banishment of outsider Jews from Italy.

Hitler’s invasion of Poland resulted in France and Britain declaring war

against Germany. Mussolini, on the other hand, stayed evenhanded. Per
contra, its invasion of Denmark and Norway persuaded him that Hitler
would be victorious in the war. In June 1939, as Germany plowed through
France, Mussolini declared Italy’s entrance into the war.
Adolf Hitler’s Rise to Power
Adolf Hitler’s rise to power started in Germany during September 1919.
In this year, Hitler joined the political party, Deutsche Arbeiterpartei.
This party was anti-Marxist and opposing the government of the Weimar
Republic and the Treaty of Versailles. It was supporting nationalism, Pan-
Germanism, and anti-Semitism.

On the 29 th of July, 1921, Hitler became chairman of Deutsche

Arbeiterpartei, which is renamed to National Socialist German Workers’
Party, or NSDAP. In the same year, he challenged Anton Drexler to
become leader of the Nazi party. He agrees, and Hitler becomes the new
leader of the Nazi party.

In 1932, Hitler became a German citizen. This made him able to stand in
the Presidential election against Paul von Hindenburg. Then, in January
of 1933, he became chancellor of a coalition government. There, the
Nazis have a third of the seats in the Reichstag. In October of 1933, he
withdrew from the League of Nations. Later, he trebles the size of the
German Army, neglecting the arms restrictions appointed by the Treaty of
Versailles. In June of 1934, Hitler eliminates all opposition amongst his
party. Therefore, crushing any of his rivals.
