Topic:

Relationship between Jane and Elizabeth in the Novel (Pride and Prejudice)

Introduction:

Jane and Elizabeth Bennet are two of the closest Bennett sisters, both in age and in emotional
disposition. They are very attached to one another and willingly sacrifice for the other. The
beautiful, humble, and sophisticated Jane (age 23) is an apt role model for her four younger
sisters. Jane is the elder one and then is Elizabeth. However, from first, it is perhaps clear to
us that Elizabeth is smarter and with stronger personality. On the other hand, Jane was an
innocent and at times a naïve young who trusts people very easily. Of course, what is
interesting to me is that in Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen kept a character called Jane in the
first place but then she did not make her the heroine of the novel. This is funny to me because
if I write a novel then I would never keep a character with my name. Jane is prettier while
Elizabeth Bennet is smarter. Jane admires people very easily while her younger sister has a
much more critical eye. Thus, if you had read the novel then you would perhaps agree with
me that the two sisters are quite opposite. Well, somehow, I find that they have something in
common.

Both of them are good young girls. They became like their father Mr. Bennet. It is clear that
Mr. Bennet was a kind hearted and good man and he was very supportive to his daughters.
Both Jane and Elizabeth has got the same attitude. They like each other and they are very
supportive. They are adorable and any man would become lucky and perhaps happy if they
get married to either of them. Of course, if you are a man then you have to understand the
value of girls like these two sisters.

I think that this is thing that Jane Austen wanted to show us. Yes, the two sisters have
opposite personality traits. Yet, they are adorable, good and lovely. They believe in goodness
and kindness and try to act to their idea. Many men while looking for a wife do not know
what qualities they should look into a woman. Perhaps, the message of Jane Austen is that
first search goodness in a girl and then other things. Only then, a man can be lucky and happy
in a marriage. Jane Bennet was a very ordinary girl but she was a good girl and Mr. Bingley
was surely lucky to become her husband. Of course, we have to assume that they lived
happily ever after.

Objectives

Following are the objectives of this research Synopsis.

1. To examine the relationship of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet.

2. To find out the love wave and emotional views about Binglay.
3. To reveal the truth by the understanding of both sisters.
4. To find out the way where they disagree with each other and going in contrast.
5. To know the reality of society of British culture and moral values in women’s at that time.

Rationale

The main purpose of this research is not for the sake of art only but it will highlight the
background of the text. This work will extract the new dimension with new framework.
Coincidence it’s something same in most family. Elder one and ordinary and pretty. And smaller
smarter. Most of men looking for wife’s as qualities into women as like Jane bannet. I’m also
like as like girl. But she is have to some smarter qualities.

Research Questions

The present research is conducted with the base of the following research questions.

1. How does author explore Jane and Elizabeth complement and contrast with each
other?
2. What is the comparative analysis of Jane and Elizabeth views about Binglay?
3. How literary techniques do are used to express the authors views about Society and
the views of both sisters?
4. How author reveal the truth by Jane Austen while she describe Elizabeth Bennet?
5. Is Jane prettier than Elizabeth?

Literature Review

The two complement each other because Elizabeth urges Jane to more passion and Jane urges
Elizabeth to more caution. They are very close to each other and, despite their flaws, more
intelligent than the other females in the family. I think Jane Austen uses Jane as Elizabeth's
foil to contrast the differences between the two girls thus showing that although people can be
4

very different they still want similar things in life. Jane’s sweet disposition and beauty gets
her noticed wherever she goes. Even Bingley’s sisters see her kindness “I have an excessive
regard for Jane Bennet, she is really a very sweet girl,” Jane is quick to see the good in
people, even if they aren’t good people. For example, after Elizabeth tells her about
Wickham’s true character, Jane tries to argue that Darcy may be mistaken. Elizabeth however
judges people straight away and once she has made up her mind she is adamantly against
changing it. This is shown when she first meets Darcy and instantly dislikes him and also
when she befriends Wickham and believes his story without proof; “Can such abominable
pride as his [Darcy], have ever done him good?” Elizabeth is intelligent and others in the
neighborhood recognize her intelligence and perhaps see her honesty, wit and sarcasm as
snobbery, which makes Elizabeth less popular than Jane. The Good natured, less judgmental
and more beautiful older sister, Jane, is more appealing to people than the impetuous
Elizabeth. How the two sisters behave in public is quite different and affects how they are
perceived by other characters. Mr. and Mrs Bennet the parents of the sisters are very diverse
in personality, just like Jane and Elizabeth. This could be why Mr. Bennet favors Elizabeth
and Jane is favored by Mrs Bennet.

Research Gap

I have studied several articles regarding the Portrayal of women through different characters in
the Novel. And I have found that authors does not explore their views about Darcy and also does
not mention about Elizabeth why she become anxious when Jane stay in Binglay home. While
she does not like Binglay anymore than Jane and her mother. Why Mr. Bennet was
unconditionally willing for the marriage of Jane and Elizabeth with Mr. Binglay.

Research Methodology
The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. The tool of textual analysis is adopted
for this research. The research is based on a close reading of the novel. The research method
consists of some sections involved, research design, data resources, data collection and data
analysis.

Delimitations and Limitations

My objectives, research questions and theoretical framework are the delimitations of the
research. I have selected specific text and framework to work on, and the preferred
things of the text and the framework would be discussed and analyzed in order to explain
5

my delimitations. Moreover, the things which I have control on, are my delimitations. Read
the opening chapter of Pride and Prejudice, and you might feel that there's nothing more to be
said about Mrs Bennet. After all, Austen's narrator signs off her beautifully pitched dramatic
exposition of Elizabeth's parents with something that sounds like a categorical declaration:
"Her mind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little
information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous.
The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news."
Indeed, had this been Austen's previous novel, Sense and Sensibility, there probably wouldn't
be anything more to be said, since that story, at least in its early sections, is reassuringly
direct and decided in its narratorial judgments.

Conclusion

Elizabeth Bennet

The novel’s protagonist. The second daughter of Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth is the most intelligent and
sensible of the five Bennet sisters. She is well read and quick-witted, with a tongue that occasionally
proves too sharp for her own good. Her realization of Darcy’s essential goodness eventually triumphs
over her initial prejudice against him.

Jane Bennet

The eldest and most beautiful Bennet sister. Jane is more reserved and gentler than Elizabeth. The
easy pleasantness with which she and Bingley interact contrasts starkly with the mutual distaste that
marks the encounters between Elizabeth and Darcy.

Jane Bennet is a sweet, gentle-natured woman and is Elizabeth's confidant. They talk about their
relationships with boys, like any sisters would, and they support each other. Jane is in some ways the
opposite of Elizabeth. They are two sisters. Jane is the elder one and then is Elizabeth. Jane is prettier
while Elizabeth Bennet is smarter.
