ACTIVITY 2: LET’S READ TOGETHER!
Instruction: The class will be divided into 4 groups. They are to read the story entitled DESIRE
by Paz Latorena. After reading, they are going to answer the guide questions and present their
answers to the class. They will be given 30 minutes to complete the task.
Guide Questions
1. What is the story about? What do you think is the author’s message to readers?
2. What events during the American colonial period could have inspired the author to write this
story?
3. Which parts of the story reflect the Filipino experience during the American colonial period?
4. Why did the author use English to write the story despite the use of Tagalog in literature
flourishing at the time?
5. Do you think the story would have benefited from being written in Tagalog or any of our
national languages instead?

Instruction: Answer the following questions below in a 1\2 sheet of paper.

How does learning about literature during the American colonial period give you a better
appreciation of both literature and history?
INDIVIDUAL (SHORT STORY)
Instructions: Ask each student to write their own short story (500 words) in English,
following the given parameters:
a. The story must be based on a time in their lives when they were forced to pretend to get along
with someone, or endure a situation where they had to be civil, even if they didn’t want to, or
were unhappy.
b. The story can be a nonfiction straight retelling or a fictionalized retelling. However, the story
must be based on a real experience.
2. After they finish writing their story, have them answer the following questions in a separate
sheet of paper:
a. Why did you choose to write about those particular events?
b. Why did you decide to behave in a civil manner in that situation?
c. If you chose not to pretend to get along/be civil, what were your reasons for doing so?
d. The Americans “liberated” the Philippines from the Spaniards and chose to call their
colonization of our country “benevolent assimilation”. Do you believe that it was truly
“benevolent”? If so, why do you think there were still rebellions during this time? If not, why do
you think so?
3. Ask some students to share their work in class.

Directions: The students will read the excerpt from the “Dakilang Asal” by Aurelio Tolentino,
the IV. Sa Pagbibihis.

2. Do you think the lessons contained in the poem are still applicable in today’s world?
Why or why not?
3. Based on what you know of Aurelio Tolentino’s life; why do you think this was written?
4. Do you think the fact that the poem was written in Tagalog is significant? Why or why

5. If you translate this poem into English, do you think it would have the same impact? Why

Directions: Create your own poem in English, following the given parameters. Write
your answers on a one whole sheet of paper.

 The poem must talk about any of the following;


a) Parents; Mother and Father
b) Teacher
c) Sibling
 The poem must have at least 4 stanzas with 4 lines each.
 The poem can have rhymes or be in free verse.
