1. Karnataka prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of cattle ordinance,2020 to ban slaughter


of cattle, with effective from Jan 18th.
2. AP and Telangana CMs to submit Detailed Project Reports (DPR) of all new projects of Krishna
and Godavari River Management Board (KRMB & GRMB) to Jal shakti Minister. AP has started
19 projects out of which 15 in the krishna Basin and 4 in the Godavari Basin, Whereas
Telengana has 7 in Krishna Basin and 8 in Godavari Basin.

6. Gujarat rivers remain highly polluted, due to unchecked flow of industrial effluent in to rivers
in Gujarat has led to increasing pollution in Sabarmati, Narmada, Mahisagar, Vishwamitri and
Bhadar. Sabarmati is one among the highly polluted rivers in the country. Gujarat ranks 4th
among the top five states with highly polluted rivers with as many as 20 in the critically
polluted list.
As per the official parameters, if the chemical oxygen demand (COD), which indicates organic
pollutant load is higher than 250mg per litre, then it should not be released into rivers. Most
of the gujarati rivers have COD in the range of 700 - 1000 mg per litre. Whereas Dissolved
Oxygen (which indicates healthiness of a river) should be around 6-8 mg per litre, but most of
the perineal rivers have less than 2.9 mg per litre DO. State government has proposed 2300
crore project to release the effluent in to the deep sea which caters around 4500 industries for
effluent treatment.
