INTRO
If you’ve been on the internet for more than a few hours, you’ve likely seen at least one
advertisement teaching you how to make thousands of dollars a day, working in your
underwear, in the comfort of your own home. These ads are so ridiculously popular that
if you’re like most people, you start doubting whether it really IS possible to make
money online.
There are countless stories of people who have been misjudged, shunned, and shamed
because they didn’t fit the preconceived notions of a certain mold. In our experience, we
are equally inclined to overestimate our own talents in some areas while simultaneously
undervaluing our abilities in other areas. It’s like looking in a fun house mirror—you see
a version of yourself that resembles you, but it’s so distorted that you really can’t use it
as a guide. What’s worse is that we often let somebody else hold the fun house mirror,
and they add to the distortion by moving that mirror around in whatever way suits them
best. In order to start finding and seeing your true talents, you need to understand the
two distorted mirrors that are preventing you from seeing your true self: the “Lake
Wobegon effect” and the “kangaroo court of talent.”
Humorist Garrison Keillor has made an entire career of poking fun at a particularly
interesting facet of the human psyche known as illusory superiority. For his long-
running variety-hour radio show A Prairie Home Companion, the avuncular Keillor
created a fictional town named Lake Wobegon, “where all the women are strong, all
the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” That cute,
counterintuitive hook should put a smile on your face, because our intuition tells us
what statistics confirm: It is impossible for all members of a set to be above average
across the same dimension. One real-life demonstration of the Lake Wobegon effect
plays out when people are asked to rate their driving ability relative to the rest of the
population. Time after time, the vast majority of those polled
rate themselves high in driving ability, usually well above average. They’re basically
saying, “Everyone else is a terrible driver, just not me. I’m amazing.” The Lake
Wobegon effect is your ego subconsciously protecting itself from thoughts it has
determined to be harmful—in this case, the uncomfortable truth that you are a worse
driver than you perceive yourself to be. A speck of selfdeception is actually useful.
Since we deceive ourselves to deceive others, a classic example of this is
overconfidence in business.
When others doubt your abilities to deliver, overconfidence can go a long way in
assuaging their fears. But too much self-deception is just plain dangerous. It is like
your immune system kicking in when you get infected with a bug. When you have a
foreign substance like a virus or bacteria in your body, you want some temporary
protection while your body’s natural defenses kick into gear—but if your immune
system is switched on at all times and is busy attacking healthy tissue, you’re suffering
from an autoimmune disorder. And when it comes to accurately judging your own
hidden talents, Lake
Wobegon’s overzealous, nonstop protective effect of hiding the truth—maybe an ugly
truth—from your ego becomes your worst enemy.
T
THE ONE HABIT THAT RULES THEM ALL: THE 10- MINUTE RULE
Developing your POP might strike you as an overwhelming prospect, like taming a wild
animal. We want you to know it’s not: There’s a simple way to work on it and in the
process develop a powerful habit for your hustle. The best part is it takes a mere 10
minutes per day. If life has taught the three of us anything, it is this: Getting started is the
single most difficult aspect of doing anything worthwhile. Not finding a good idea. Not
executing. Think about your life. From mundane tasks like washing dishes after dinner to
Prepared exclusively for roesler.alex@hotmail.com Transaction: 1655
going for a run to getting up without hitting snooze at 5 a.m. fourteen times to writing a
book about hustle, it is the thought that is vastly more painful than the actual task.
Always has been, and always will be. How many times have you groaned at the thought
of going to the gym only to find that once you are all of 7 minutes into your workout, you
not only feel absolutely fantabulous, you question why you even hesitated in the first
place? How absurd! And inescapable and human. As irrational creatures of habit, many
of us tend to put off small breaks in our routine to do the things that we need most. Like
getting to bed early when we know we need rest; opting for a healthy meal when we’ve
felt bloated for 14 days in a row; not prioritizing quiet time for reading; forgetting to
unplug from our Internet devices for even a day; putting off a work task or home chore
that’s nipping at our conscious— whatever it may be. To alleviate the inevitable feelings
of self-imposed friction, what we call the anti- hustle, we have a simple solution—maybe
even brilliant in its simplicity. The 10-Minute Rule states that instead of contemplating
and delaying, simply do something that moves you—sans judgment—for 10 minutes
and then evaluate. Do for 10 minutes, then evaluate. (Not evaluate for 10 minutes and
never do.) Say you want to exercise but also want to talk yourself out of exercising right
now. Stop talking, stop deliberating, and instead start walking briskly or, better, go to the
gym and pick any exercise machine.
Just do it. Ten minutes is all we’re asking for. Go, get started! Maybe you have a
presentation to craft for a meeting tomorrow afternoon but would rather play Ping-Pong
or a game on your phone or check Facebook or Twitter to search for hilarious animated
GIFs. Instead, plant yourself and focus on one thing: Jot down the key message of the
presentation, work out the points you’ll need to cover. Do it in 10 minutes or less. Set
the countdown clock on your phone or watch if need be. It’s a simple way of staying
productive, present, and focused in the moment, and in a place of near constant
momentum.
Putting the 10-Minute Rule into practice saves us time and headaches and allows us to
quickly make decisions about how to prioritize and allocate our resources and energy by
circumventing our propensity to overthink.
While we find numerous advantages to employing the 10-Minute Rule, there are three
main benefits. 1. Rapid Productivity: Have something critical and essential—or even
annoying—to do? Tackle it immediately, as in right now. Ten minutes is all you have to
get moving. Make a quick list of a few items, plot them on your calendar or to-do list,
and pick any one of them to start. Have a phone call to make? Smile and dial. An e-mail
to send? Craft it and get it out quickly, like Hugh Forrest. A proposal that needs to get
out the door and to your clients? Wrap it up. A pitch to practice to win new business?
Talk
through it in front of a mirror for 10 minutes. Or maybe it’s just scheduling a brief
meeting to close a deal. Cement it on your and your client’s calendars now. You have
something that must get done today—we all do—and now is better than later. So just
Prepared exclusively for roesler.alex@hotmail.com Transaction: 1655
do it, get moving, get ’er done—and done now. Start the day with a burst of the 10-
Minute Rule. Track your progress for a week to see how this helps you. 2. Unfettered
Presence: Ever felt distracted or even powerless against the forces of overwhelm and
overload? Do you find yourself torn between tracking your American Express expenses,
taking a peek at TMZ, and responding to more text messages and social media invites
than you can count? Use the 10- Minute Rule to get undistracted and be present with
one task at a time. Own it. That means sitting or standing upright with good posture,
practicing steady nasal breathing, and staying present with the task at hand. If you’re
working on your smartphone, use only one app. If you’re on another device, the same
rule applies—do only one thing at a time. Breathe it in, focus on it, and finish it—and
only it. Then move on. Give yourself 10 minutes to exert real control over your destiny.
3. Friction-Free Persistence: It’s
been said that “God is action.” Think of your 10-minute session as a spiritual practice.
It’s the Zenlike daily practice of mindful doing. It’s a meditation, a short burst of
effective, non-judgmental output. You are a monk in your temple of doing, whether it’s a
monastery or a cubicle. You’re committed to pursuing opportunity and enjoying small
doses of gain every day. The short time required forces you into a focused and
disciplined bubble, after which you can decide if you want to pursue the question,
problem, or pursuit of opportunity for a longer period. We know someone who created a
sign for his office that
read, DO NOT DISTURB. I’M IN THE TEMPLE OF DOING. You might follow suit.

DROPSHIPPING
What Is Drop-shipping?
Drop-shipping is where a seller sets up a website and sells products that the seller does
not keep in stock. When an order is placed, the seller sends it to a third party — the
manufacturer, another retailer, or a wholesaler — who ships the goods directly to the
buyer.
It’s a fast-growing trend of online middlemen who keep the difference between the
wholesale and retail price and cost you extra money. And while drop-shipping is not
illegal, there is a lot of room for problems and abuse for buyers and sellers.
Three common ways to find a supplier for your dropshipping store are:
When a customer buys something in your store, DSers fulfills the order automatically. All
you have to do is double check that the order details are correct and click the Order
button. The product then ships from the AliExpress dropshipping supplier to the customer,
no matter where they are in the world.
In the dropshipping business model, you are responsible for building your website and
your own brand, as well as for choosing and marketing the products you want to sell. Your
business is also responsible for shipping costs and establishing prices that result in a
good profit margin.
As with any other business, dropshipping takes significant commitment and a long-term
perspective. If you’re hoping for a six-figure income from six weeks of part-time work,
you’re going to be sadly disappointed. By approaching your business with realistic
expectations about the investment required and your potential for profit, you’ll be much
less likely to get discouraged and quit.
When starting a dropshipping business as a beginner, you’ll need to invest heavily using
one of the following two currencies: time or money.
Bootstrapping and investing sweat equity to build your business is our recommended
approach, especially for first-time dropshipping entrepreneurs. We favor this approach
over investing a large sum of money for numerous reasons:
You’ll learn how the business operates inside and out, which will be crucial for managing
others as your business grows and scales.
You’ll intimately know your customers and market, allowing you to make better decisions.
You’ll be less likely to spend large sums on vanity projects that aren’t critical to success.
You’ll develop several new skills that will make you a better entrepreneur.
Realistically, most people aren’t able to quit their job to spend six months ramping up their
new online store. It may be a bit more challenging, but it’s definitely possible to get started
with dropshipping, even if you’re still working a 9-to-5 position, assuming you set
appropriate expectations regarding customer service and fulfillment times for your
Prepared exclusively for roesler.alex@hotmail.com Transaction: 1655
customers. When you start to grow, you can transition into working full time on your
business as much as cash flow and profitability allow.
All businesses and entrepreneurs are unique, but it’s possible to generate a $1,000 to
$2,000 monthly income stream within 12 months working approximately 10 to 15 hours
per week building your business.
If you have the option to work on your business full time, that’s the best choice
to improve your profit potential and chance of dropshipping success. Focusing
all your efforts on marketing is especially helpful in the early days, when
building momentum is crucial. Based on our experience, it will usually take at
least 12 months of full-time work with a strong emphasis on marketing for a
dropshipping business to replace an average full-time income of $50,000.
That may seem like a lot of effort for a relatively small payoff, but keep these
two things in mind:
In the early stages, it’s crucial to have someone who is deeply invested in the
success of the business building it from the ground up. Without understanding
how your business works at every level, you’ll be at the mercy of expensive
programmers, developers, and marketers who will quickly eat up any profits
you’re generating. You don’t need to do absolutely everything yourself, but we
strongly recommend being the primary driving force at the outset of your
venture.
Niche products often have a more passionate customer base, which can make
selling to specific crowds easier by raising awareness for your products.
Fitness, fashion, beauty products, electronics, phone accessories, and yoga-
related items may be a good entry point to start dropshipping with no money.
Google Trends. Google Trends can help you determine if a product is trending
upward or downward, as well as the seasons they tend to trend in. Note
that Google Trends doesn’t show search volume. So if you use it, be sure to
cross reference your data with a keyword tool like Keywords Everywhere to
determine the product’s popularity in search.
3. Do competitive research
Now that you know what you’re going to sell in your store, you want to look at
who your competitors are and understand the way they work. Your competitors
may hold great clues to success and can help you build a stronger marketing
plan for your dropshipping business.
Run a Google search. Search engines are an obvious starting point. Use
Google to build a list of your top five competitors. Start with key search terms in
a simple search, like “ear plugs.” The top 10 results will show you who your top
competitors are and how they are promoting their products. If you want to focus
on a specific country, you can use a third-party tool like Ahrefs or SEMRush to
find keyword data in those areas.
Use competitor spy tools like Similarweb and Alexa. Online tools like these
are great for finding (and keeping track of) your competitors’ online activity.
They give you a list of competitor website information, such as their social
media profiles, top traffic sources, number of visitors, and who their competitors
are.

Browse social media. Search for Facebook ads in your niche and check out
the top brands in the market. Look at how the business communicates with its
customers, how its feed is designed, how much engagement it gets—you can
even follow its feed to never miss a beat. Use this information to find ways for
your business to stand out and improve your social media marketing strategy.
At this point, you’ve vetted what dropshipping products you want to sell and
know they can be profitable—now you want to make sure you find a
dropshipping supplier that gives you the high-quality service you need to grow.
Ecommerce platforms like Shopify offer a plug-and-play style option for finding
potential suppliers by connecting DSers to your online store.
The DSers app uses AliExpress to help you find and add products to your store.
If you want to read more about product quality or shipping times, or further vet a
supplier, you can do so from the DSers product page.
Shopify makes it easy to build and launch your ecommerce website, from
finding a domain name to adding marketing and sales plug-ins. It’s a complete
commerce platform that allows you to sell in multiple places (including online),
sell in multiple currencies, and easily manage products and accept payments.
You don’t need to be a designer or developer to use Shopify either. And you
can easily change the look and feel of your store with the store builder
and Shopify themes.
Sole proprietorship
This is the simplest business structure to implement but also offers no personal
liability protection. So if your business is sued, your personal assets also may
be in jeopardy. Filing requirements are minimal and you simply report your
business’s earnings on your personal taxes. No other state or federal business
filings are required.
C corporation
So which structure to choose? Again, we’re not lawyers and would advise you
to consult with one before making any incorporation decisions. Most small
entrepreneurs tend to go with either a sole proprietorship or an LLC. Personally,
we’ve used an LLC for all of our dropshipping businesses because we feel it
offers the best trade off regarding liability protection, autonomy from personal
finances, and costs.
Fortunately, getting an EIN number is easy and free. You can apply for an EIN
number online.
You’ll want to keep your business and personal finances separate as much as
possible. The best way to do that is by opening up new accounts in your
business’s name. You’ll want to open the following:
You should run all of your business finances through one primary checking
account. All business revenue should be deposited into it and all expenses
should be withdrawn from it. This will make accounting much easier and
cleaner.
Credit card
You should have a business credit card that is used for business expenses and
dropshipping inventory purchases only. Because you’ll be buying a lot of
merchandise from suppliers, you can rack up some serious rewards with the
right rewards travel cards. We’ve found that Capital One has the best travel
rewards program and that Fidelity Visa/American Express offers the best cash-
back program.
You’ll need to collect sales tax only if both the following are true:
If your state does charge sales tax, be prepared to collect it on the limited
number of orders from customers in your home state. You’ll want to contact
your state’s department of commerce to register as an online retailer and find
out how frequently you need to submit the tax you collect.
Most cities and towns require businesses to get a business license that needs
to be renewed on a regular basis. However, this requirement may differ for
dropshipping businesses, many of which likely will be operated from home
offices. You’ll want to look into your local laws and regulations to see what, if
anything, is required.
The following resources can help get you started with understanding this
process, but we strongly recommend consulting with a legal professional before
making any decisions:
With so many things about dropshipping being automated, you can spend time
focusing on marketing and promoting your business in the following ways:
Prepared exclusively for roesler.alex@hotmail.com Transaction: 1655
1. Paid ads (Facebook and Google). The average cost for a Facebook ad is
around 97¢ per click, which isn’t too bad if you’re newer to advertising on the
social media platform. Facebook ads are scalable, products can perform well on
them, and they tap into people’s desire to impulse buy. You can run Google
Shopping Ads and target long-tail keywords where shoppers are more likely to
buy. There’s typically more price competition with Google ads, but it may be
worth your time to test it out.
3. Content marketing. If you want to build a long-term stream of traffic for your
store, add content marketing into your dropshipping business plan. Start a blog
around your dropshipping niche and create content that entertains and
educates your target audience. You could also start a YouTube channel, create
infographics, or start a podcast to help get the word out about your brand.
4. Communities. Get involved with groups of people who are passionate about
your niche. You can start conversations with potential customers on Reddit,
Facebook Groups, or online forums. Remember not to be too sales-y when
engaging with a community. Aim to help and build relationships with potential
customers so they trust your brand and want to buy from it.
As with any successful online business, keep an eye on which channels are
working and which aren’t—especially if you’re investing money in them via paid
ads. As you continue to grow and improve your business, you can always adjust
your marketing strategy to lower costs and maximize revenue.
Sales. What are my best performing channels? Where should I put more ad
dollars? What are my bestselling products? Who are my best customers?
Shopper behavior. Are people buying more on desktop or mobile? What’s the
conversion rate for each device?
Profit margins. What products and variant SKUs are the most profitable? What
are my sales and gross profits looking like month over month?
You can also use tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to measure
search traffic over time and improve your search engine optimization (SEO)
efforts. Plus, if you’re using a third-party app for your social media or
Messenger marketing, check the reports monthly to make sure your overall
strategy is working for your business.
