This document defines common terms related to information and communication technology (ICT). It explains that font refers to character shape, clip art is pre-drawn artwork, and a template sets standard slide layouts. It also defines text boxes, bulleted lists, and slides. The document distinguishes between software instructions and physical hardware components. It identifies the central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), and read-only memory (ROM) as core computer components. Additional terms covered include graphical user interface (GUI), command line interface (CLI), window icon menu pointer (WIMP), input, output, and desktop publishing (DTP). Finally, it describes different types of printers and useful hardware for desktop publishing.

Clip art: pre-drawn art work or photographs Template: a standard slide layout where all settings have been already decided for you Text box: a rectangular or square box that is used to contain text Bulleted list: a dot or any symbol put before text to make a list Slide: one page containing a message as part of the power-point presentation Slide master: a template you made that has the design you want on the every power-point presentation. Software: set of instructions that can be “run” on a laptop or computer etc Hardware: the physical part of a computer that you can touch and see CPU = central processing unit – the cpu is like the “brain” of the computer RAM = random access memory – ram temporarily stores the instructions that the computer is running or the data is processing – ram is volatile and if the computer loses its power the contents of its ram will be deleted When using the computer the ram will have 1. the operating system software 2. the application software currently being used 3. 3.any data that is being processed ROM = read only memory – it’s used to hold a special or small piece of software – rom is a non-volatile storage which means that it will never be lost even if the power is switched off GUI = graphical user interface – windows, icons, menus and pointers CLI = command line interface – difficult to use / only easy or suitable for expert users WIMP= window icon menu pointer Input= something that gets information into the computer. Output=something that gets information out of the computer DTP= desktop publishing. Inkjet printer: produces very high quality printing where speed is not an issue Dot matrix printer: production of continuous stationery where noise is not an issue Laser printer: produces rapid high quality and high volume printing Graph plotter: produces very large printouts such as size A0 DTP: desktop publisher Useful pieces of hardware for desktop publishing: scanners, printers, and digital cameras.
