Question 1. Separately for each of the Five IR perspectives, briefly describe how an observer, with that IR
perspective, would view MUNFA’s two-week long strike in February, coupled with the subsequent settlement
(which, among other things, resulted in a 12% pay raise in addition to annual 2% ‘step’ increases for 4 years),
with respect to i) which stakeholders deserve blame for the strike, and ii) how other stakeholders will be, or
have been, affected. (20 marks).

Question 2. This question is also based on the MUN-MUNFA labour dispute, and impasse, from earlier this W23
term. It is accurate to say that MUN is, of course, a publicly-funded university, and its employees are public
sector workers. Briefly describe three distinct and separate ways that this dispute probably would have been
different if MUN was a purely private university that did not rely on, or receive, any public funding.

Question 3. In this B3335_081 course, five different strands of the legal environment were discussed. For each
of these five strands, briefly describe i) how frequently it would likely apply, and ii) in what way(s), to a self-
employed (without employees) recent immigrant who runs her own home cleaning business in Montreal.
Presume that while her business is small and informal, her business is incorporated, and that she relies on
referrals and word-of-mouth to find new clients. Briefly explain your choices. By ‘briefly describe’, 2-3 sentences

Question 4. Suppose that as a result of increased foreign competition that has led to reduced sales and negative
profits over the past few years, the two co-owners of a small, non-union manufacturing company (i.e. the ABC
Company in St. John’s, NL), that has 25 full-time hourly-paid production employees, recently announced a
package of cost-cutting decisions, to be implemented immediately, involving:
- Reducing scheduled full-time workweeks from 37.5 to 35 hours for the production employees,
- Making cuts to the health and dental benefits provided to production employees,
- Laying off the five most junior production employees, and
- The purchase of a new machine that can automate the simple tasks that 2 of those 5 laid-off production
employees had been doing.
