RESCHEDULED Open-book, Remote, Individual Quiz#2 – Mar 22-25, 2023
Instructions:
- To ensure legibility, I would prefer that you complete this quiz by inserting text (i.e. typing and/or cutting and
pasting) in the answer spaces and saving as one word (or pdf) doc. Please include your first and last name in your
filename (e.g. 3335_Quiz2_Jane_Doe_25Mar23).
- But, if you insist on printing and writing in answers ‘longhand’, that is fine, but it then needs to be submitted as a
single pdf doc by the deadline. No photographs, or multiple docs, will be accepted!
- You must submit your completed quiz, via the “RESCHEDULED Quiz#2: NOW due by 0900 NDT on Sat Mar 25!! ”
dropbox on the 3335_081_W23 D2L course shell.
- If you have some completely unforeseen incident that prevents you from posting your word or pdf doc into the
dropbox by the deadline, then (and only then) should you submit photos of your answers so that I can verify your
answers. But, in that instance, you will still need to provide a single word or pdf doc asap afterwards (that
obviously matches).
- This quiz officially begins at 2000 NDT on Wed March 22, and must be submitted by 0900 NDT on Sat Mar 25. As
soon as it is posted, you are free to begin. NOTE: QUIZZES RECEIVED 15-60 MINUTES LATE ARE SUBJECT TO A 20%
DEDUCTION. QUIZZES RECEIVED MORE THAN ONE HOUR LATE, WITHOUT VALID EXPLANATION, WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED.
- Try to answer all questions in the space provided. If you need more space, please insert more space, even if that
alters the page numbering. Quality matters far more than quantity! On past quizzes, struggling students usually
lost marks when answers are incomplete, vague, or contain contradictory information. I’ll say it again in another
way: Please choose your words carefully. Longer answers are not necessarily better. Incorrect information leads
to deductions, even if you have the right information too.
- Type name &/or ID on each page (via edit header), please.
- This is intended to be a 120 min quiz, although you are allowed to work on it as long as you wish, as long as you
submit by the deadline. That said, I think that it is unethical to work on this quiz for more than 180 minutes, and
spending excessive time on this quiz could or would impact your sleep patterns and/or workload in other courses.
Alas, there is no way for me to monitor the time when a registered student accesses the quiz, or how long is spent
working on it. Nonetheless, honour is important, and I encourage you to make an ethical choice, and to stick to
this timeframe, please.
- Because I have provided a sufficient window to undertake this quiz, I believe that Blundon Centre (BC) users should
be able to meet the assigned deadline as well. For example, a person entitled to 1.5 times ‘normal time’ has been
given a big enough window to find 120*1.5 = 180 minutes to complete the quiz before the Mar 25 deadline.
- Point form is okay, but you need to make yourself clear!
- Open book. You can use notes, readings, laptop, videos, web searches, and/or smartphone, etc.
- You ARE allowed to brainstorm with other students when analyzing each of these quizzes while underway, but you
must create and submit your own, UNIQUE, answers. That is, you can brainstorm and analyze the questions
together, but you must work on your own once you begin to work on your answers.
- Obviously, students are at risk of being accused of academic misconduct if submitted answers are identical or
substantially similar. Careful! There were some suspiciously close answers on a couple Quiz#1 papers!!
- If you are unsure or unclear about the wording of a question, you should explicitly state your assumption, and then
answer the question. It is not feasible or possible to ask questions of the instructor during this quiz, and for the
response information to be shared with all students in an efficient-timely-equitable manner. Thus, the instructor
will not be answering any questions during the quiz.
- If you submit your quiz late, you must include a plausible, detailed explanation for the delay!!
- This quiz consists of 6 multi-part questions over 8 pages.

Question 1. Separately for each of the Five IR perspectives, briefly describe how an observer, with that IR
perspective, would view MUNFA’s two-week long strike in February, coupled with the subsequent settlement
(which, among other things, resulted in a 12% pay raise in addition to annual 2% ‘step’ increases for 4 years),
with respect to i) which stakeholders deserve blame for the strike, and ii) how other stakeholders will be, or
have been, affected. (20 marks).
Hint: You cannot just define a given perspective in this open-book quiz! You must apply each of them to the
real world, contemporary issue/example that was provided above, and to answer both parts of this question.

different if MUN was a purely private university that did not rely on, or receive, any public funding.

of these five strands, briefly describe i) how frequently it would likely apply, and ii) in what way(s), to a self-
employed (without employees) recent immigrant who runs her own home cleaning business in Montreal.
Presume that while her business is small and informal, her business is incorporated, and that she relies on
referrals and word-of-mouth to find new clients. Briefly explain your choices. By ‘briefly describe’, 2-3 sentences
should be sufficient for each strand. (15 marks)

profits over the past few years, the two co-owners of a small, non-union manufacturing company (i.e. the ABC
Company in St. John’s, NL), that has 25 full-time hourly-paid production employees, recently announced a
package of cost-cutting decisions, to be implemented immediately, involving:
- Reducing scheduled full-time workweeks from 37.5 to 35 hours for the production employees,
- Making cuts to the health and dental benefits provided to production employees,
- Laying off the five most junior production employees, and
- The purchase of a new machine that can automate the simple tasks that 2 of those 5 laid-off production
employees had been doing.

Discuss the appropriateness of this business decision. (12 marks)
