LOVE – A Heartfelt message from “Your Name”

Your Name (Japanese: Kimi no Na wa) is a Japanese animated romantic fantasy film. It depicts a high school
boy in Tokyo and a high school girl in the Japanese countryside who suddenly and inexplicably begin to swap
bodies. The film won Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and
other awards.

In this anime movie, Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school girl living in a rural town of Japan, Itomori. Bored of
the town, she wishes to be a Tokyo boy in her next life. One day, she inexplicably begins to switch bodies
intermittently with Taki Tachibana, a high school boy in Tokyo. Thus, when they wake up as each other on
some mornings, they must live through the other's respective activities and social interactions for the day. They
learn that they can communicate with each other by leaving messages on paper, phones, and sometimes on
each other's skin. In the movie, Mitsuha and Taki both keep on switching bodies every other day. Mitshuha
and Taki both began to understand each other more and more as the days past by, they were switching bodies
for 3 weeks until one day it suddenly stopped. Taki then tries to call Mitshuha but even after a lot of tries her
phone number comes up as incorrect. It turns out that Taki and Mitshuha were in 2 different timelines which
was 3 years apart. This is seen when Mitshuha went to meet Taki in Tokyo, she was meeting with the Taki 3
years younger than the one Mitshuha knew. According to Taki’s timeline, he started switching bodies with
Mitshuha after she died from the horrible meteor shower at Itomori. While according to Mitshuha’s timeline,
she started to switch bodies with Taki before he knew her in his timeline. Due to this difference in timelines
between Mitsuha and Taki, Taki could save Mitsuha and Itomori resident’s life. Taki and Mitshuha both
agreed to write their respective names in each other’s hand so that they wont forget each other, but Taki
actually wirtes “I love you” on Mitshuha’s hand while Mitshuha didn’t get enough time to write her name on
Taki’s hand. Later, both Taki and Mitshuha forget each other, not knowing each other’s name.

The movie is not about two people finding out each other’s names — it’s about truly understanding someone
else. When Taki writes his “name” in Mitsuha’s hand, he doesn’t actually write his name—he writes “I love
you.” Love is hard work and requires two people to invest in one another. This shows that love is to
understanding and believing unconditionally. It aspires and inspires our life in such a way that we can come
out of any calamity – even natural disasters.
