Kimi No Nawa or Your name is a Japanese movie inspired by the earthquake that struck Japan
in 2011. It was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The movie portrays time traveling,
spiritual beliefs, and switching bodies. It also deals with emotional ties, deep connections, and
differences that people have. Do you believe in destiny? Or have you ever thought of having a
parallel universe? Some of the questions that linger on our minds that we don’t know the
answers.
A story of a teenage girl named Mitsuha who lives in a rural province in Itomori and a Tokyo boy
named Taki shares a magical connection and discovers that they are switching bodies. Things
got even more complicated when they decided to figure out what was happening to them and
find their ways to each other.
The movie ideally showcased traditions, trends, and myths of Japanese culture in a very
magical way using such media literacy skills in animation. Especially when the male protagonist
drunk the female protagonist’s spit in her “Shinto” ritual. It also shows how the two were
connected. The storylines were well-written and seemed to be realistic. It shows differences in
other people's lives, how life in the countryside and the city differs.
Although the movie is hard to understand in the beginning, you’ll soon get how everything works
as you proceed to the next scenes. The facial expressions of the characters are very well
animated. The cinematography, the setting, and the special effects give you goosebumps and I
think that is what also touches the hearts of the viewers. Places and other settings from the
story were also based on places in Japan and that makes it more magical and interesting,
specifically the female protagonist’s place the “Lake Suwa” in Itomori Japan. The lyrics of the
movie’s soundtracks were ideally written for the movie and the singer’s voice perfectly matches
the vibe of the whole story.
Overall, Your name or Kimi no Nawa is greatly written and created. It can be thrilling at some
point but the strong feeling and emotions that it conveys is what makes it Kimi No Nawa. It is a
very recommendable movie, I assure you that it can be one of your best anime movies on the
go.
