Teaching Demonstration Detailed Lesson Plan in Science and Technology

I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
1. Observe life forms other than plants and animals.
2. Use a magnifying lens to observe them.
3. Share what they know about these life forms with classmates and groupmates.

II. Learning Task:

A. Subject Matter
Module 3 – Living Things Other Than Plants and Animals
Activity 1: “Are these also plants?”

B. Science Concepts
1. There are life forms other than plants and animals. These includes:
a. Algae – a photosynthetic organism including microscopic types and
multicellular types, such as seaweeds. They are widely distributed as
marine and fresh-water plankton; some are edible and good sources of
agar.
b. Fungi – heterotrophic organism that includes the microscopic molds
and yeasts and multicellular mushrooms and toadstools.
c. Bacteria – unicellular organisms with a diameter of one to two
microns. Some bacteria cause diseases, such as tetanus, but others are
useful as sources of antibiotics.
d. Lichen – a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and a
photosynthetic organism, like an alga.
C. Values Integration
 Learners will be getting to know or recognized other organisms aside from
plants and animals and share what they know about them with their
classmates.
D. Teaching Aids
 Activity sheets, visual aids, materials on the activity, live specimens

III. Teaching Strategies

Teachers Activity Students Activity Teachers Note

A. Daily Routine
1. Opening prayer
2. Checking of attendance
B. Review
1. We are through with
module 2 which is about Cell is the basic unit of
plant and animal cells. structure and function of
Can you tell me again living things
what is a cell?

2. What cell organelles are Nucleus, plasma membrane,

found in both plants and cytoplasm, mitochondrion,
animal cells? rough ER, smooth ER,
Golgi body, vacuole,
ribosome, lysosome

3. What cell organelles are Cell wall and Chloroplast

present only in plant
cells?
4. What cell organelle is Centrioles
present only in animal
cells?
5. And what equipment or Light
tool is used to study Microscope/Microscope
cells?

C. Motivation
The teacher will show a live
specimen of mushrooms,
seaweeds, and lichens and after
that the teacher will ask the
students the following questions: Yes ma’am!
1. Are you familiar with this
class? Answers maybe yes or no
2. Are they plants?
3. Some of you answer yes
while some of you
answer no. We will find
that out in our activity for
today.

D. Introduction
During your elementary
grades, you have learned about
animals and plants, their
different kinds, their
characteristics and needs. Today,
we will examine some living
things which may be found in
our environment. These living
things can be found in the soil,
water and air all around us. They
are also found on our body and
inside it, on the food we eat and
the things we use. Many are
useful to humans while some are
harmful and may cause disease.
And you will ask yourself the
question: “Are they also plants?”
E. Lesson Proper
1. Presentation
a. Introduce the title of
the activity to the
students – “Are these
also plants?”
b. Present the objectives
to the students
2. Pre-Activity
a. Introduce the safety
measure in
performing the
activity to the
students
b. Introduce the
different materials
including the live
specimens to the
students
3. Activity proper
a. Distribute the activity
sheets and materials
to the students
b. Guide the students in
the following
procedure
c. Students perform the
activity
d. Students discuss their
works
e. Teacher checks and
discuss the answers of
the activity

F. Post-Discussion
1. Mushroom is an example
of fungi. It is an edible
fungi. Molds on the
banana peel are also an
example of fungi. Some
fungi are pathogenic to
humans and can cause
diseases.
2. Seaweeds are example of
algae. They can be found
near the seabed and some
of which are edible.
Another example of algae
is the lumot or green
algae. They can be found
on rocks and on wet
surfaces such as ponds
and also in the aquarium.
3. You have observed
organisms growing on the
surface of a potato slice.
This is an example of
bacterial colony.
Bacteria are the simplest
and smallest organisms
with a diameter of one to
two microns. They are
believed to be the first
form of life on earth.
They are the most
abundant and the most
common organisms on
earth. Some bacteria are
also pathogenic or can
cause diseases, such as
tetanus, but others are
beneficial to humans as
sources of antibiotics.
4. Those white spots that
are found at the bark of a
tree are called Lichens.
Lichens is formed when a Yes maam!
fungi associates with an
algae.

G. Application/Generalization No maam.
1. Did the activity we
performed earlier answer
your question “Are they Fungi, Algae, Bacteria,
also plants? Lichens
2. What do you think? Are
they also plants?
3. What other forms of life The students will give their
have you learned today answer
aside from plants and
animals?
4. Do you know other
organisms similar to
these? What are they?

E. Evaluation

Direction: Read each statement carefully and determine if the statement is

true or false. Write “TRUE” if the statement is true, and if it is
false change the underlined words to make it correct. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.

1. Fungi, algae, bacteria and lichens are also living organisms.

2. Lichens are combination of fungi and algae.
3. Magnifying lens are use to see some organisms that are very small and
cannot be seen by the naked eye.
4. Some mushrooms are edible.
5. Some fungi and bacteria are pathogenic which means they are useful.

Answer Key:
1. TRUE
2. TRUE
3. Microscope
4. TRUE
5. they can cause diseases

IV. Assignment
 Bring plastic gloves and plastic bags tomorrow. We will go out and look
for more of these living things that are found in the school ground.
