The Neurobiological Basis of Emotions


All emotions are, in essence, impulse to act, the instant plan for handling life that
evolutions has instilled in us. – Daniel Goleman

The amygdala had been the center of action, the motional sentinel that can take control
of our actions even before the neocortex could assess what to do.

Emotional Intelligence
The ability to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustrations, to control
impulse and delay gratification, to regulate one’s mood and keep distress from
swamping the ability to think, to empathize, and to hope.

Important sign that you’re emotionally intelligent


1. Knowing one’s emotions or self awareness.
This is about how we feel or the thought behind the feeling.
2. Managing Emotions.
We can have control on how long emotions would last.
3. Recognizing Emotions in others.
Empathy- the capacity to recognize emotions in others. If we recognize our
emotions, it would be easier for us to recognize others’ emotions.
4. Handling Relationship.
Organizing groups, negotiating solutions, personal connection, and social
analysis.

A descriptive term reffering to variations in level of arousal, affective state or
mood, expressive movement, and attitudes.
Paul Ekman- He Identified the six basic emotions.
 Happy
 Afraid
 Anger
 Surprise
 Sad
 Disgust

Robert Plutchik – he is a psychologist who theorized that emotions are multi-


dimensional, orhaving various intensities, identified these as: adoration, ecstasy,
anticipation, rage, disgust, grief, surprise, and fear.

 Find balance on the emotional spectrum a line exist between sharing our feelings
that build trust and oversharing which erodes trust
 Strive to be relatable rather than vulnerable
 Actively listen to understand and identify

Tips how to develop emotional Intelligence


1. Practice observing how you feel
- Pay attention to where that emotion is showing up as a physical feeling in your body
and what the sensation feels like.
2. Pay attention to how you behave
- Observe how you act when you’re experiencing certain emotions, and how that affects
your day to day life.
3. Question on your own opinions
- Take time to read the other side of the story and have your views challenged (even if
you still feel they are right.) This will help you understand other people and be more
receptive to new ideas.
4. Take responsibility for your feelings
- your emotions and behavior come from you, they don’t come from anyone else and
once you start accepting responsibility have a positive impact on all areas of your life.
5. Eatwell
- This sound like an easy one but regulating what you eat and drink can have a massive
effect on your emotional state, so try your best to maintain a balanced diet.
6. Positive Thinking
- To keep motivated it’s important to maintain a positive and optimistic mindset.
- Surround yourself with positive, well-motivated people,
- They’ll have a great effect on you.
