What is Market Research?

In simple language if we say research is a search for pertinent information about a specific topic. But
when it comes to market research it is the systematic collection, recording, and analysis of qualitative
and quantitative data about concerns associated with the marketing of goods and services. The
objective here is to determine and evaluate how shifting aspects of the marketing mix affect consumer
behaviour.

Types of Market Research:

1. Exploratory Research
Exploratory research is defined as a research used to investigate a problem which is not clearly
defined. It is conducted to have a better understanding of the existing problem, but will not provide
conclusive results.
2. Descriptive Research
It is a research method that accurately and systematically describes characteristics of a population,
situation or phenomenon. This methodology focuses more on the “what, where, when and how” of the
research subject than the “why” of the research subject. It can answer what, where, when and how
questions, but not why questions.
3. Causal Research (also known as explanatory research)
It identifies the extent and nature of cause-and-effect relationships between two or more variables. It's
often used by companies to determine the impact of changes in products, features, or services process
on critical company metrics.

Data are collected on the basis of:

Primary Research
Research is conducted first hand to obtain data. Primary research is based on raw data. Researcher
“owns” the data collected.
Sources: Interviews (telephonic or face-to-face), Online surveys, Focus groups, Observations
Secondary Research
Research is based on data collected from previous researches.
Secondary research is based on tried and tested data which is previously analysed and filtered.
Sources: Data available on the internet and Commercial information sources
