Practical Training (9045/9046)

COURSE INTRO-

Course duration: 8 hours Course Level: Basic Knowledge & Skill

Course ref: OWaH-HSE Max. Learners No.: 16

PURPOSE
The OPITO Working at Height standard is to introduce learners to working at heights, the
associated regulations and guidelines as well as hazards, varying equipment and to introduce
learners practically to varying equipment and PPE and the necessary practical skills required for
inspection and use of equipment and PPE and safe ascent to and decent from a height.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the Theory standard, learners will be able to explain:
 Applicable regional legislation and guidelines.
 Hazards associated with working at heights.
 Safe systems of work for working at heights.
 Different platforms for working at heights.
 Different ladder types, safe use and associated hazards.
 Fall prevention measures.
 Fall arrest systems.
 Appropriate structural anchor points, attachment points and work positioning points.
 PPE and associated equipment including pre use inspection.
 Dropped objects.
 Emergency procedures and rescue equipment

Upon completion of the Practical standard, learners will be able to demonstrate:

 Pre work planning.
 Inspection and donning of an appropriate harness.
 Correct pre use checks and use of fall prevention and arrest equipment, including
restraint lanyards and work positioning lanyards.
 Ascent and decent of ladders, ladder transfers and working on platforms.
 Attachment to structural anchor points, work positioning and attachment points.

PREREQUISITES
There are no pre-requisites required for the Theory WaH training, but learners will have to
complete the Theory, as a pre-requisite to commencing the Practical training.

TEACHING METHODS
The course will be delivered by means of classroom lectures and skills training exercises.
Workshop practice content: not required for this course.
Pre & post course tests are performed to measure knowledge acquisition. Post-test will be
open book.
