Concept of hands

Hours Hand
Smaller one is called the hour hand or short
hand

Minutes Hand
Larger one is called minute hand or long hand.

Angle traced by hour hand in
12 hrs = 360°
1 hr = 30° = 60 min
1 min = 1/2° = 0.5°
Speed of hour hand = 0.5 dpm (degree per minute)

In this type of questions they
are given time & we have to find
angle between the hands.
How do you find the angle between needles in a clock?
Example : 2:20 ?
using trick method
Minutes hand:
1 min = 6 degree so 20 min = 20× 6=120 degrees
Hours hand:
(i) 1 min = 1/2 degree so 20 min = 10 degrees
(ii) 1 hour = 30 degree
2 hour = 2 x 30 degree = 60 degree
But we have to find degree subtended by 2 Hours and
20 Minutes = 60 + 10 = 70 degrees

angle between needles = 120-70 = 50


Hours hand N o’clock = 30N
P min = 1/2P = 0.5 P
Minutes hand P min =6P

we are using for + values

If they give 2 values ( i.e Hours , Mintues Or angle, hours ) in the
question we can easy to find 3 rd value

θ= |-50| = 50
angle between needles = 50 ( clock wise)
Or 360- 50 = 310 ( Anticlock wise)

θ= | 270-11 × 10|

Or 360- 160 = 200 ( Anticlock wise)

θ= | 30×9-11/2 × 30|

Or 360- 105 = 255 ( Anticlock wise)

In this type of questions they
are given angle and hours
& we have to find time.
What time does the clock shows when the hour hand is
between 3 and 4 and the angle between the two hands of the
clock is 50° ?
θ= | 30H-11/2 M|
50= | 30×3-(11/2)M|
50= | 90-(11/2)M|
50 = 90-11/2 M 50 = - 90+11/2 M
50-90 = -11/2M 50+90 = 11/2M
-40 = - 11/2 M 140 = 11/2M
M= 40×2/11 M =140×2/11 3:073/11
= 80/11 = 280/11
=7 3/11 = 253/11 3:253/11
What time does the clock shows when the hour hand is
between 6 and 7 and the angle between the two hands of the
clock is 50° ?

50= | 30×6-(11/2)M|
50= | 180-(11/2)M|
50 = 180-11/2 M 50 = - 180+11/2 M

The hour hand and minute hand meet (0) once every hour. But in a 12
hour period, they meet 11 times. ( straight line in the same direction )

There is one angle of 180 degrees in every hour i.e. both the hands
are in the straight line in the opposite direction, but in a twelve hour
period it happens 11 times.

There are 2 other ( except 0,180 ) angles every hour, but in a 12 hour
period there are 22 such angles.

Q).A watch gains 5 minutes in one hour and was set right at 8 AM. What time
will it show at 8PM on the same day?
Solution:
A correct clock would have completed 12 hours by 8 pm.
But the faster clock actually covers 5 min extra in one hour.
So, it will cover 12×5=60 minutes extra.
Therefore, when the correct clock would show 8 pm, the faster
clock will show 60 minutes extra i.e. 9 pm.

Q).A watch loses 5 minutes every hour and was set right at 6 a.m. on Monday.
When will it show the correct time again?
Solution:
A watch is losing 5 mins per hour
so it will lose 24 ×5 mins =120 mins/days or 2 hours per day .
( Same time will repeats in every 12 )
So it takes 12 hours covers in =12/2 = 6 days
Now its monday ,after six days it will be sunday.
i.e. from 6 Am (set right) on Monday .
it will show 6am on Sunday again which is the right time.

Q).A watch which gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes was set right at 7:00 a.m. in
the afternoon of the same day when the watch indicated quarter past 4o'clock
the true time is ?
Solution:
Time between 7:00 a.m. to to 4:15 p.m. i.e 9 hours 15 minutes or 555 min
True time - indicated time
180 sec. - 185 sec ( 3 Min )
? - 555 min
180/185=x/555
x=540 min or 9hr
Add 9hr to 7am = 4pm

Q). A watch which gains uniformly was observed to be 5 minutes
slow at 9:00 am on a Tuesday and 7 min fast at 9:00 am on the
nextday. What did the watch show that correct time ?

5 min 9:00 AM Tuesday


7 min 9:00 PM Wednesday

12 min 0 hours+ 1 day ( 24×1)


12 min 24 hours
1 min = 2 hours
NOTE :
If we are taken first value we have to add the time
If we are taken the final time we have to subtract the time
The watch gains 1 minute in 2 hours

5×2=10 hours 7×2= 14 hours

slow at 9:00 am on a Tuesday and 3 min fast at 12:00 noon on the
subsequent Wednesday. What did the watch show that correct
time ?

9 min 3 hours+ 1 day ( 24×1)


9 min 3+24=27 hours
1 min = 3 hours

Q). There are two clocks on Wall , both set to show the correct time at 8 a.m.
One clock loses 2 minutes in an hour while the other gains 1 minute in an hour
by how many minutes do the two clocks differ at 12:00 noon on the same day ?
Time between 8:00 to 12:00 = 4 hours
In 4 hours
1st watch ( 2 min lose per hour) = 4× 2=8 min lose
2nd watch ( 1min gain per hour) = 4× 1=4 min gain
The two clocks differ at 12:00noon = 8+4=12 min

If it takes 6 seconds for a clock to strike 4 o’clock, how much time will it take to
strike 12 o’clock?
There are 3 interval when the clock strike 4.
Time taken for 3 interval =6second.

Time taken for each interval=6÷3=2.
Hence,time needed=2×11=22 seconds
A clock strikes once at 1 o’clock, twice at 2 o’clock, thrice at 3 o’clock and so on. How
many times will it strike in 36 hours?
Clock strikes once at 1 , twice at 2. Thrice at 3. And so on. But it only strikes 12 times.
And then it repeats.
So No. Of times clock strikes in 12 hrs =(1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12)
=78
No. Of times clock strikes in 38 hrs. =3 × No. Of times clock strikes in 12 hrs
= 78 × 3
= 234 times
Five bells in a church toll at interval of 12 seconds, 15 seconds, 20 seconds, 25
seconds and 45 seconds respectively.If all of them toll at 5 am. What time next,
they will toll together?
Since all are to toll together next, this interval has to be the
L.C.M.of 12, 15, 20, 25 and 45
which is 900 seconds or 15 minutes.

∴ Time when all five bells will toll together next is 5.15 am.

3 o'clock means the minute hand pointing at
12:00 and the hour hand pointing at 3:00
