Professional Organization Selected: NICE (National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly)
The organization I have chosen to explore is NICE (National Initiative for the Care of the
Elderly). The organization is made up of a variety of professionals and everyday citizens that are
committed to improving and providing the best geriatric care. They work towards bridging the
gap between education and training surrounding geriatric care and the actual practise of caring
for geriatric patients and clients. NICE offers an E-newsletter that everyone is able to subscribe
to at no additional cost. The newsletter has potential to be a good way to stay informed about
upcoming webinars and events that subscribers and the public can register to attend; however I
have not received a newsletter from the time of subscribing. NICE has an annual conference
focusing on elder care that members of the community, professionals, and students can attend.
The website also has a vast collection of tools and resources available on different topics.
I chose this organization due to their emphasis on community and having representation
from a multitude of professionals that work within geriatric care and representation and
collaboration with older adults and caregivers. Another reason for choosing NICE is due to the
extensive tools and resources the website has available, and the ease of navigating and locating
these resources. NICE provides accessible resources by creating simple headings that point you
in the direction of the information you are seeking, such as Caregiving, Addictions, Financial,
etc. They also provide a list of resources that are available in specific provinces. The information
on NICE is smaller than that of a larger organization, however it is user friendly to navigate and
locate information.
PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO PART C 3
Through exploration of the NICE website, I have found that they put a large emphasis on
international collaboration which is done with their partner organization ICCE (International
Collaboration Care for the Elderly). ICCE is made up of nine countries that share their own
individual information and research about caring for the elderly with each other so that the
information from one country can be adapted and used in another. This is especially beneficial
I have also learned that within the organization there are what they refer to as their
“theme teams”. There are seven teams and each team is dedicated to one aspect of elderly care
such as palliative care or financial advice. Together that dedicated team decides their goals for
the year and what information and tools they would like to create and make available on that
subject.
The NICE organization, with its extensive online resources and tools, is a valuable
resource for healthcare professionals. LPN’s and other healthcare professionals who work with
older adults should have a variety of resources to turn to for information and not just rely on one
or two resources. In addition to NICE being an informative learning tool for the LPN, the
organization is also useful for the LPN to have as a resource that they can direct patients, clients,
