I. CCSS met:

● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.3
Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective
choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.

II.) Learning Goals/Objectives:

Students will… be able to apply knowledge of language to identify topic sentences, transition
words, and supporting details in a paragraph.

III. Context of lesson:

Students have been learning how to write a perfect paragraph. The day before, students
were given notes on how to write a perfect paragraph. They also were given an example of a
perfect paragraph where they went through and highlighted the different elements needed for a
paragraph (i.e. Topic sentence, transition words, and supporting details). The purpose of this
lesson was to reinforce what students learned the day prior and to allow them time to practice
identifying topic sentences, supporting details, and transition words. This will help them clarify
their writing and prepare them for next week. Next week, students will be given their first
writing assignment and will have to write two perfect paragraphs on their own.

IV. Overview of the lesson:

Act 1: The teacher will begin by briefly going over what the class has been learning over the past
few days. It will be focused on elements of a perfect paragraph (i.e. Topic sentence, transition
words, and supporting details). The teacher will ask students to recall what a topic sentence is, the
importance of supporting details, and ask for examples of transition words. Then, the teacher will
introduce the Developing a Paragraph Worksheet, specifically number one through four on the
first page.

Act 2: The teacher will think aloud and model number one on page one of the Developing a
Paragraph Worksheet for the students. The teacher will be modeling how to identify the topic
sentence, transition words, and supporting details in the paragraph given. Also, the teacher will
be modeling on the document camera so students can follow along.

Act 3: The teacher will ask students to practice underling topic sentences, circling transition
words, and numbering supporting details for numbers two through four on the Developing a
Paragraph Worksheet. Students will be completing this on their own first. Then, students will
have the opportunity to share their responses with the class. Lastly, the teacher will ask if anyone
needs any clarification on what was presented.

V. Assessments:

Students will be asked to complete numbers two through four on the Developing a
Paragraph Worksheet on their own. The teacher will be observing, circulating, and monitoring
around the room to see how students are performing. The teacher will give guidance and
feedback to each student.

VI. Adaptations/Modifications:

Students may use their Writing a Paragraph Notes from the previous day. I will be projecting the
Developing a Paragraph Worksheet onto the SMART board, so students can visually follow
along.
