Elementary Education Year 1 Lesson Plan Template

Part 1: Lesson Overview

School and classroom: Date: Grade:
Benard Long Elementary School with Mrs. Thompson Grade 3 Class 04/09/2024 3rd grade
Lesson topic: Students will review geometry shapes to get ready for Lesson length: 12:15pm – 12:35
state test in the upcoming week.
Part 2: Learning Standards
State-adopted student academic content standards and/or Common Core State Standards that are the
target of student learning. Note: Please list the number and text of each standard that is being addressed.
If only a portion of a standard is being addressed, then only list the part or parts that are relevant.

Geometry 3.G: Reason with shapes and their attributes.

1. Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others)
may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a
larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as
examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to
any of these subcategories.

Part 3: Lesson Objective

Use “ABC” Format: The [Actor/Student] will [Behavior (aka Language Function)] by [Conditions Description]

Students will be able to review on their geometric shapes by using subject specific vocabulary that shows the different
characteristics of each shape and will be able to name each shape by their correct term. Students will review with TC
using a PowerPoint and an assessment tool with Kahoot.

Part 4: Assessment Plan:

How will you check for learning at the beginning, middle and end of lesson?

In the beginning I will provide guidance with revieing the characteristics and names of the geometric shapes and their
categories, such as a quadrilateral. In the middle I will check for the students learning by providing other examples of
geometric shapes and have students partner in two to “turn and talk” to provide an answer. In this section of the lesson,
students will also be recording on a sheet so that TC can see how students are doing. At the end I will check for
understanding by providing an assessment with Kahoot, students will do this individually at their desks.

In the future I will assess students for a grade by providing a worksheet for the students to work, with this worksheet it
will cover characteristics and name matching to see where the students are in the progress.

Part 5: Teaching and Learning Sequence/Procedures

Be specific. Step by step how you will teach the lesson? Consider an introduction, group work, independent practice, etc

First: I will begin my lesson by telling students about my expectations and rules during the lesson. Second: I will provide
the presentation I have prepared for my students and ask them if they can remember some of the names of the geometric
shapes, as well as asking them what some of the subject specific vocabulary means. This means I will touch base with
their prior knowledge before beginning the lesson. Third: I will go into my review lesson by providing names of the
shapes and giving them examples, including real world examples. I will also provide un-named shapes in the following

slides for students to “turn and talk” and name the shape based on their correct term. I will also provide definitions of the
subject specific vocabulary, for example, vertices, and giving them a “turn and talk” session to count the vertices in the
following examples. Finally: Once all shapes and subject specific vocabulary have been reviewed and students have had
time to “turn and talk” I will provide them with the prepared Kahoot to assess them individually. I will make sure to tell
my students that this assessment is not for a grade and to be respectful with their peers (I understand students can be
competitive, but they should be respectful while doing so).

Part 6: Behavior Management (give behavior expectations to the class)

How do you plan to manage the classroom, gain student attention and engage the learners? What strategies will you use?

To manage my students, I will set my expectations before beginning the lesson, then I will also mention them before we
start the Kahoot assessment. I will also provide attention grabbers by designing a presentation that has color and is
appropriate for their grade and age level. I will also provide engaging questions that require students to “turn and talk” to
get their answers. I will also provide a fun assessment (Kahoot) that the students are familiar with at the end of the
lesson. This way students are engaged during the lesson and can end with a fun activity.

Part 7: Instructional Materials and Resources

I will be providing the presentation and the technology (along with the students’ Chromebook) to complete the lesson.
Students will only need to be present and engaged during the lesson and will need to be participating in the “turn and
talk” sessions.

Part 8: Closure
How will you wrap up the lesson?

To wrap the lesson, I will ask my students if they enjoyed the presentation, I will ask my students if they need
clarification in any of the lesson, and I will ask my students if they are ready for the next part of the lesson (the Kahoot
assessment).

Commentary: Think about and plan for What ifs. These are thoughts of things that might cause you to change your
lesson ex. The technology is unavailable during your lesson How will you compensate or modify your lesson to handle it
(Each instructor might add some specifics here that should be addressed which relate to the course they teach.)

If students have no time left for the Kahoot assessment, we can leave the assessment for the end of the day. Or a review
for the following day. In this case, I will have students review a few questions with me since I will not be able to assess
them with Kahoot until the following week.

If students are not engaging during the lesson, or failing to engage with their peers, I will have to ask the questions and
expect an answer from the class. I will also expect students to write down their answers on a sheet that has the slide
number for them to answer in the line provided. (This sheet will be provided by me).

If technology fails, I will have my questions and examples ready in paper format and provide students with some shapes
(not all) and ask students characteristics of these shapes and the name of the shape. I will want my students to write
down their answers on a sheet of paper and also “turn and talk” to their partner. I will not be expecting a 100% accuracy
on spelling but will expect students to be able to name and label some characteristics of the shape after reviewing the
lesson with the class.
