B. MOTIVATION
Alright! Before we proceed to our discussion we will
be having an activity. This activity is called
“ARRANGE ME”. Here are the mechanics in their
activity.
-The teacher will present a jumbled picture of the
life cycle of a butterfly.
-The teacher will ask for a volunteer to arrange
the life cycle of a butterfly.

What did you observe in that activity? I observe that it is the arrangement of the stages of
the butterfly.

Correct! Just like in context of composing a

paragraph we should not skip one part of a paragraph.

C. PRESENTATION

In order to know the correct construction of paragraph

we will first find out what is paragraph and its parts.

What is paragraph?

Thank you. The paragraph is a distinct section of writing

covering one topic. A paragraph will usually
contain more than one sentence.

Paragraph is a group of several sentences connected

together by a single idea. It should be unified,
coherent, and well developed.

An effective paragraph contains three main parts.

Look at this illustration
I have here a burger which has a complete package. It
has a top bun, patties and other ingredients and the
bottom bun. Top bun represents as the topic sentence or
introduction. Patties and other ingredients represent as
the body or the details and the bottom bun represent as
the conclusion or the closing sentence.

Thus, the three main parts are connected to each other

whereas all parts must be considered in order to form a
paragraph just like in burger you should have all of
those ingredients for you to make a burger.

What is Topic Sentence? Topic sentence tells the reader the main idea, or
what the paragraph will be about.

Very good!

Topic sentence presents the topic of the paragraph. It

will serve as a guide for the writer to keep his or her
writing under control. This is why, a topic sentence is
called the “controlling idea” of the paragraph.

Example of a topic sentence:

There are three reasons why I prefer walking to other
physical activities.

The sentence above shows that the topic is about

walking. It will guide the writer to focus only on the
reason why he or she prefers walking to other physical
activities.

The next part of the paragraph is detailed/body Detail/body sentence come in the middle of the
sentence. read the presentation. paragraph and provide details and support that is
related to the main idea.

Its serve as the body of your paragraph. This is where

you elaborate your topic by including specific details or
evidences. All of the sentences in the body must relate
to the topic sentence. These sentences should be
organized accordingly through the use of transitional
devices.

Example of detailed sentence:

One reason is that walking cam be done easily. I can
do it anywhere at any time with no need for any
equipment. Also, I prefer walking because it is good for
the heart. I don’t have to do much effort while walking.
Lastly, I prefer this physical activity because it is safe.
It is not as risky as other physical activities like
swimming, racing or biking.

The sentences above are supporting sentences

elaborating the topic sentence which is about the
reasons why the writer prefers walking to the other
physical activities. The sentences are connected by
using the transitional devices of addition such as: one,
also, and lastly.

Did you get it? Yes, Ma’am.

Let us proceed to the next part which is the last part of

the paragraph. Kindly read the meaning of concluding
sentence . This sentence refers to the topic sentence and sums
up the main idea of the paragraph.

Alright. Very Good.

Concluding sentence restates what the topic of the

paragraph is all about. It comes after all the details have
been included in the body of the paragraph.
The box below contains the list of transitional devices
used in concluding sentence.
Conclusion: thus, hence, indeed, finally,
therefore, consequently, in conclusion, to
conclude, as a result, in the end, and for all these
reasons

Summary: so, accordingly, briefly, in brief, in

sum, summing up, in summary, to sum up, as
can be seen, given this point, and to summarize

Example of the closing or concluding sentence.

For all those reasons, I consider walking the best
physical activity of all.

The sentence above is the concluding sentence showing

the conclusion how the speaker feels about walking. It
uses transitional device for all those reasons.

Understood class? Yes, Ma’am.

This is the complete example of paragraph that we been

discussed earlier.
There are three reasons why I prefer walking to
other physical activities.

One reason is that walking cam be done easily. I

can do it anywhere at any time with no need for
any equipment. Also, I prefer walking because it
is good for the heart. I don’t have to do much
effort while walking.

Lastly, I prefer this physical activity because it is

safe. It is not as risky as other physical activities
like swimming, racing or biking.
For all those reasons, I consider walking the best
physical activity of all.
Did you get it class? Yes, Ma’am.

Alright.
For a paragraph to be effective, there are basic features
of the paragraph that must be observed.

The first features is the Unity.

What is unity? Kindly read.

Unity in the paragraph means oneness of idea. A

good paragraph possesses unity when all the
Alright. Thank you. sentences develop the main idea.

Unity means that all sentences in the paragraph talk

about one central idea. This means that the writer will
deal only with one topic. It is important because it
guides the writer with his or her idea.

Example:
Apples make us healthy. They are rich in fiber that
reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. They also
have vitamin C that boost the immune system and
helps defend the body from infections and diseases.
Lactobacilli, a type of probiotic that is good for
digestion, is another component present in apples. In
addition, apples have potassium that reduce the risk of
high blood pressure and cardiovascular complications.
Indeed, apples are nutritious and good for health.

Do you see the unity in the paragraph? Yes.

Yes. The paragraph above has unity. It tackles one

topic which is ’Apples makes us healthy’. With this,
the supporting sentences talk about the healthy
components of apples. Then, the concluding sentence
emphasizes the main idea of the topic sentence by
restating the apples are nutritious and good for our
health.

Did you understand? Yes, Ma’am

Alright. Let us proceed to the second feature which is

the Coherence. What is coherence? The sentence should further be arranged in an
orderly sequence and linked to one another to
ensure a smooth progression of ideas from one
sentence to another.
Coherence is referring to connection of ideas in the
paragraph in general. The idea in the topic sentence, as
well as in the supporting sentences and concluding
sentence, is connected to each other through the use of
transitional devices.

The paragraph above has coherence. Because the

sentence is connected to each other through the use of
underlined transitional devices.

Did you understand? Yes, Ma’am.

Very good.

Do you have any question or clarifications? No, Ma’am.

Since you do not have any questions and clarifications,

I prepare an activity.

That is good to hear.

D. APLLICATION
