MAE 415 Course Syllabus

MAE 415 – Mechanical Engineering Design I

Section 001
Fall 2022
3 Credit Hours

Course Description
The first course in the sequence of a two-semester capstone senior design project. Teamwork,
independent learning and communication skills are emphasized. Team of students practice
engineering design process through: problem definition, research, brainstorming, optimization, critical
review and analysis. Lectures focus on conceptual design, embodiment design, and quality.
Communication skills are developed through reports and presentations.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the students will be able to:
 Identify an engineering problem, and break down goals and objectives for its solution.
 Devise individual feasible design.
 Demonstrate teamwork through peer reviews.
 Classify analysis techniques.
 Produce design/manufacturing drawings.
 Use state-of-the-art software and electronic tools.
 Budget and schedule a project.
 Communicate technical information.
 Compose an engineering journal.

Course Structure
The students are divided into six different sections, each with its own assigned project. This course
meets twice a week. In the first meeting of the week, lectures focusing in engineering design theories
are explained to all students by the faculty instructor. In the second meeting of the week, lectures on
reports, presentations, and employment of design theories in the assigned project are explained to the
students in each section by its own teaching assistant in separate classrooms.
Out-of-class training in manufacturing operations is scheduled in the early seven weeks of the
semester in senior design lab. All students must be certified by the end of the semester.

Course Policies
Students are not permitted to approach others requesting information on peer evaluation.

Requirements for Credit-Only (S/U) Grading
In order to receive a grade of S, students are required to take all exams and quizzes, complete all
assignments, and earn a grade of C- or better. Conversion from letter grading to credit only (S/U)
grading is subject to university deadlines. Refer to the Registration and Records calendar for
deadlines related to grading. For more details refer to http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-
20-15.
Students are not allowed to take this course for credit only.

Requirements for Auditors (AU)

Information about and requirements for auditing a course can be found at
http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-04.
Students are not allowed to audit this course.

Policies on Incomplete Grades

If an extended deadline is not authorized by the instructor or department, an unfinished
incomplete grade will automatically change to an F after either (a) the end of the next regular
semester in which the student is enrolled (not including summer sessions), or (b) the end of 12
months if the student is not enrolled, whichever is shorter. Incompletes that change to F will
count as an attempted course on transcripts. The burden of fulfilling an incomplete grade is the
responsibility of the student. The university policy on incomplete grades is located at
https://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-03/

Policies on Discussing a Graded Assignment

If the grade for an assignment is to be discussed, the discussion must be done no later than two
weeks from the day the assignment is returned.

Late Assignment
Late assignments will not be accepted and a zero will be registered.

Attendance Policy
For complete attendance and excused absence policies, please see
http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-03.
Attendance means attending in-person. Virtual attending is absence.

Attendance Policy
Students absent from class must seek prior approval from their team and the instructor.

Absence Policy
Attendance at presentations is mandatory. Because there is no make-up presentation,
 The absent student who has no university official excuse will be penalized 50% of the
presentation grade.
 The absent student whose university official excuse is accepted by the instructor will be
penalized 10% of the presentation grade.
Attendance at the allotted training session is mandatory.
 For every absence at the allotted training session with no university official excuse, the absent
student will be penalized 50% of the make-up training grade.
 The absent student whose university official excuse is accepted by the supervisor will not be
penalized.

Makeup Work Policy
Make-up work must be arranged within one week of the due date if and only if an excuse with
proper documentation is accepted.

Additional Excuse Policy

None.

Academic Integrity
Academic Integrity
Students are required to comply with the university policy on academic integrity found in the Code
of Student Conduct found at http://policies.ncsu.edu/policy/pol-11-35-01.

Academic Honesty
See http://policies.ncsu.edu/policy/pol-11-35-01 for a detailed explanation of academic honesty.

Honor Pledge
Your signature on any test or assignment indicates, "I have neither given nor received
unauthorized aid on this test or assignment."
