QUESTIONS

1. Calculate the percentage moisture content of coal C1.

m2−m3
%moisture = x 100
m2−m 1

17.1348 gm – 17.1239 gm
= x 100
17.1348 g m – 16.3256 gm
0.0109 gm
== x 100
0.8092 gm
= 1.35%

2. Calculate the percentage volatile matter content of coal C1.

m2−m3
%volatile = x 100
m2−m 1

19.3579 gm – 19.1603 gm
= x 100
19.3579 g m – 18.5364 gm
0.1976 gm
= x 100
0.8215 gm
= 24.05%
3. Calculate the percentage ash content of coal C1.
University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines

m2−m3
% of Ash = x 100
m2−m1

17.9301 gm – 17.3846 gm
= x 100
17.9301 gm – 17.0826 gm
0.5455 gm
= x 100
0.8475 gm
= 64.75%

4. Calculate the percentage of fixed carbon content of coal C1.

% Carbon fixed = 100 – (%moisture + %volatile + %ash)
= 100 – (1.35% + 24.05% + 64.75%)
= 100 - 90.15%
=9.85%

5. From the results obtained, calculate the fixed carbon and volatile content on a dry, mineral
matter free (dmmf) basis.
6. From these figures and the calorific values provided, determine the ASTM Group to which
the coal belongs (refer to Table 2).
7. Answer the problem below.
A coal has 8% moisture, 34% volatile matter and 46% ash. Calculate % volatile matter and
% fixed carbon on dmmf basis and determine the ASTM Group to which the coal belongs.
