HEALTH LESSON PLAN

Topic: Online safety

Grade Level: 4th/5th

Colorado Health Standard:

1. Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to
enhance health
2. Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other
factors on health behavior
3. Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and avoid
health risks

Specific Objective:

● what it means to leave a digital footprint, and how to make positive changes to their
online activity

Materials Needed:

1. Access to internet
2. Phones
3. Digital footprint worksheet

Lesson Objectives:

● Help students learn/aware of their own online presence

-Psychomotor:

● Speaking to partner, sharing in class thoughts about digital footprint/imprint

-Cognitive:

● Recognizing final thoughts about digital footprint


● Logic and reasoning onto why certain aspects of life should not be shared online
● Developing list of positive and negative words while examining famous people's digital
imprints
-Affective:

● Receiving information and discussing with partner/class


● Identifying positives and negatives of sharing life on social media

Description and Procedure of Lesson (be specific):

1. Staying safe online


a. Explain to students that staying safe online is by creating boundaries that depend
on each of our values, priorities, age, life stage, school, family expectations and
many other factors. The being safe online is something everyone will want to
consider and set while using the internet
2. Ask students what they think a digital imprint is?
a. Listen to a few students thoughts of digital imprint
b. Explaining digital imprint:
i. The impact that your online activities leave on you
1. Including things you see, hear or read as well as things other
people say and do to you online
2. Not necessarily good or bad; the effect digital imprints have on
you depends on a lot of different factors
c. Questions to discuss with class about digital imprint
i. What do you see, hear and read online?
ii. Are there things you feel like are a waste of your time or disturbing you
online?
iii. Do you have rules when it comes to your online presence set by your
parents?
3. Ask students what they think a digital footprint is?
a. Listen to students thoughts on a digital footprint
b. Teacher explains digital footprint
i. Your footprint is made by things that are visible on your social media.
Such as: posts, photos, status updates, check ins at locations, online
groups, an posts from other people that you've liked or shared
ii. Includes things that can be learned about you based on your activity
1. websites you visit
2. person information
3. messages
4. Emails
4. First activity!
a. Students will get to pick one partner to do this activity with
b. Together they will have the ability to use their phones to search two famous
people on social media of their choice
i. Ask students: Is it easy to find content about these individuals?
c. Each group will then create lists that describes the type of content they have found
when searching these famous people (one list for each famous person)
d. Students will then text JULIAMARTINEZ713 to 37607 to create a word bubble
of the words each group has created together about various famous peoples online
presence; words can be and are encouraged to be repeated if needed/wanted.
i. The more a word is entered into the word bubble the larger it will appear;
larger words hold more value
e. Questions to discuss with class after word bubble activity:
i. Are these words mostly positive or negative?
ii. How do you think these people feel about their online presence?
iii. How would you feel if all of this information was out there about you?
5. Second Activity!
a. My digital footprint worksheet
b. Explain steps to students
i. May work with the same partner; or find a new partner!
ii. Look at the social media sites you use (Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook,
Tiktok, Twitter, etc.)
iii. Do an internet search of your own name
iv. 7 minutes to do your online searches with partner, and to fill out your
worksheets
6. Class conversation about the activity
a. What did you find?
b. What were your thoughts about what you found?
c. Are there things you would like to change?
d. Has anyone tagged you in something that makes you feel uncomfortable?
e. Were there any surprises?
f. Do you have any ideas for things you would like to change about your social
media?
7. Final thoughts about what to do if we discover things we do not like about our digital
footprints during or after this lesson
a. Tighten your restrictions on social media:
i. only accept friend/follow requests from people you know in real life
ii. Set privacy settings so that information about you (including images) are
not visible to the public
iii. Change settings
b. Delete things you don't want others to see
i. Keep in mind: these things may not completely go away if they have been
shared by others or stored somewhere
c. Reset passwords! Make sure they are strong and do not share them
d. Carefully consider each post or share on social media
