ACTIVITY 2

1.What was the mood created by the setting of the story? Describe it clearly to show a clear picture of
the setting.

The mood of the story is elusive, distant, and sad.

“He was not unhappy in his marriage. He felt no rebellion: only the calm of capitulation to what he
recognized as irresistible forces of circumstance and of character. His life had simply ordered itself; no
more struggles, no more stirring up of emotions that got a man nowhere. From his capacity of complete
detachment he derived a strange solace. The essential himself, the himself that had its being in the core
of his thought, would, he reflected, always be free and alone. When claims encroached too insistently,
as sometimes they did, he retreated into the inner fastness, and from that vantage he saw things and
people around him as remote and alien, as incidents that did not matter. At such times did Esperanza
feel baffled and helpless; he was gentle, even tender, but immeasurably far away, beyond her reach.”

It shows that even with the insistence that the character has, he saw things and people from where he
was as remote and alien, as incidents that did not matter. He was immeasurably far away, beyond reach.
This makes the mood elusive, distant, and sad.

2. Why do you think the author entitled this story as Dead Star? Explain your answer. The author
entitled this story as Dead Star, since just like the star which is lifeless, no brilliance, luster, or light, the
relationship that the characters would suppose to have for the star to shine is absent. It was loss and
sadly, it will never be regained.

Dear Julia,

Greetings of peace!
I write to you on this very important occasion when I was introduced to you and since then had this
churning of my biochemical elements in my body.

I simply would like you to know that I consider you a special gift that is within reach and I happen to
discover. I am mesmerized by the optimism of your youth, the beauty of your face and of your
character, and the seeming promise that you hold in your person.

Yet, I also would like to write that the special gift is not for myself, as I am already engaged to get
married with another lovely woman.

May you find joy, love, contentment in your life and I would like to thank you for showing me the real
gift of your person.

I treasure you now, as a friend.

Please come on my wedding.

Sincerely yours,

Your very special friend

Alfredo
