Scientific Temper
• Scientific Temper is vague to define.
To measure it on a scale is a complex task.
The term is used with other synonym terms like spirit of inquiry, scientific inquiry,
questioning, critical thinking, rational abilities, and others.
As science represents the enigma of rationality and scientific attitude, the ability
to temper their knowledge and perspective with scientific knowledge is not
straightforward.
The word scientific temper has gained popularity recently in
South Asia.
The origin of the word scientific temper goes back to the time
of scientific revolution when people started to ask questions in
prominent ways without the fearing the backlash of natural
superpower.
This was the arrival of the age of reason, rationality, and
modernity that catalysed the new social dynamics in the society.
The by-product of this age was the increasing popularity of the
concepts like, equality, justice, liberty, reason, scientific thinking among
the masses.

• Scientific Temper also embodies application of science governing rules and
norms in daily life. It includes scientific habitus, disposition, and self-reflexivity.
• Indian Context of the Origin of the Word
The word scientific temper is a cultural specific term that has prominent
space in Indian freedom struggle. Later the word scientific temper gained space in
Indian Constitution in Article 51(A). India has made it obligatory to its citizen to
imbibe, practice and disseminate scientific temperament in the society.
The corollary of this injunction is that Indian constitution
abhors superstitions, ill-thinking and pseudo-science.
Though, scientific temper is latent trait. It can be broken down
to other similar characteristics like disposition, habitus, approach and
attitude.
In other words, we may try to understand what other factors
contribute to the formation of scientific temper and then measure and
analyse it for purposes of strengthening it.
