CE 6121: Advanced Structural Steel Design

Course Teacher: Prof. Dr. K.M. Amanat

Term: April 2020

Assignment-6: Connections

Answers to all questions/problems must be accompanied by relevant

drawings/illustrations/figures/sketches etc. for easier understanding.

For solving the problems, use design formulas and avoid using charts from manual.

1. Using cyclic/seismic loading, a four-bolt extended unstiffened (4E) end-plate

connection is to be designed to connect a W21×62 beam to a W14×120
column. The beam and column material are ASTM A992 (Fy=50 ksi, Fu=65
ksi) steel and the end plate is ASTM A572 Gr. 50 steel (Fy=50 ksi, Fu=65 ksi).
ASTM A490 bolts are to be used. The required shear resistance, Vu, is 45 kips.
(Follow LRFD). Show the final design on neat sketches indicating all the
required detailing.

2. Design an eight-bolt extended stiffened (8ES) end-plate connection,

subjected to cyclic/seismic loading using the data given in question 1.

3. Design a base plate for axial dead and live loads equal to 120 and 180 kips,
respectively, and moments from the dead and live loads equal to 250 and 400
kip-in., respectively. Bending is about the strong axis for the wide flange
column W12×96 with d = 12.7 in. and bf = 12.2 in. The ratio of the concrete
to base plate area is unity; Fy of the base plate is 36 ksi and fc’ of the concrete
is 4 ksi. Show the final design on neat sketches indicating all the required
detailing.

4. Design a base plate for axial dead and live loads equal to 100 and 200 kips,
respectively, and moments from the dead and live loads equal to 1,200 and
1,600 kip-in., respectively. Bending is about the strong axis for a W14×120
wide flange column. Conservatively, consider the ratio of the concrete to base
plate area is unity; Fy of the base plate is 36 ksi and fc′ of concrete is 4 ksi.
(Follow LRFD). Design the anchor rod requirement also. [Hint: Follow AISC
Guide-1 design examples]. Show the final design on neat sketches indicating
all the required detailing.
