CE522 – Structural Design III (Steel Design)

Formative Assessment

General Instruction:
• Write your solutions in A4 size bond paper neatly and legibly. Avoid folding of the paper and erasures.
• One problem, at least one bond paper.
• Submit your output upon the resumption of the regular class. All papers must be placed on a brown
envelope. Do not forget to put your name and section on the back of the envelope at the upper left portion.

Other instructions:
• Note: If the bolt classification was not stated either exclude or not excluded from the shear plane, use the
computed shear strength instead.

1. The tension member in the figure is a C12 x 25 A36 steel (Fy

= 248 MPa, Fu = 400 MPa). The connection is with 22-mm-
diameter bolts. Let s = 50 mm.
a. Compute the smallest net area of the tension member.
Consider all possible failure patterns except with load
transfer.
b. Compute the allowable strength for ASD.

2. An L200 x 100 x 20 is used as a tension member, with

220mm diameter bolts in each leg at the usual gage
location (refer to the table). Two rows of bolts are used
in the long leg, and one in the short leg. Determine the
minimum stagger, s, necessary so that only two holes
needed to be subtracted in determining the net area.
What is the net area?

3. A WT6 x 26.5 A992 steel is attached through the flange

with six – 25-mm diameter bolts, as shown. Determine the
ASD allowable strength of the sections given.

4. Design member L2L3 of the truss shown. It is to

consist of a pair of angles with a 10-mm gusset
plate between the angles at each joint. Use A36
steel and assume two lines of 20-mm diameter
bolts in each vertical angle leg, 100 mm on
center. For each load, PD = 270 kN and PL = 215
kN.
5.
a. The load on the bracket plate consists of a service
dead load of 67 kN and a service live load of 155 kN.
If A325 bolts are to be used, determine the nominal
strength of the most stressed bolts. Let S = 50mm.
b. What will be the size of the bolt if A325 bolts are used?

6.
a. Check the adequacy of the bolts in the
connection shown in the figure. The load is a
service load consisting of a 33% dead load
and a 67% live load. The bolts are 22-mm
A325 bolt. Assume that the connected parts
have adequate bearing strength.
b. Repeat (a) for the required strength level is
used, and if surfaces are Class A, hf =1.00,
and standard size holes are used.

7. Use E70 electrodes and determine the required weld size. Use an
elastic analysis. Assume that the base metal shear strength is
adequate. Let S = 25mm.

8.
a. Referring to Problem 4 and use the cross-section you identified earlier. If the E80 electrode will be
used, determine the length of welds.
b. If the E70 electrode will be used, is the length acquired at (a) enough? If not, design for fillet weld.

9. Determine the maximum load in the weld in kips per mm

of length. Let S = 25mm

10. A simply supported W18 x 119 A992 steel beam with 8 meters in length was subjected to a service load of
990 kN/m, with a dead-to-live load ratio of 1:2, excluding the beam weight. Due to the excessive deflection, it
is then decided that an additional W18 x 119 column with a length of 7.0 meters is to be placed at the midspan
as additional support. The said action will be made to minimize the deflection to 3 mm. If the column being
added is fixed at the bottom and pinned at the top, evaluate if W18 x 119 can withstand as support. Use a
recommended value for K. Evaluate using ASD only.

11. Use A992 steel and compute the nominal compressive strength of a WT10.5 × 66 with an effective length of
4.88 m with respect to each axis. Evaluate using ASD.
12. Use A992 steel and evaluate if a W16 X 67 A992 steel column with an effective length of 5 m can carry a total
service load of 700 kN. The load consists of a 60% dead load and 40% live load. The column supports are
pinned at both ends. Evaluate using ASD.

13. Select a W14 A992 steel section for columns AB, BC, CD, DE, and
EF. The frame carries the following loads:
Roof:
Concrete Slab: 125 mm
Superimposed dead load: 1.0 kPa
Live load: 2.4 kPa

Floors:
Concrete Slab at fifth floor: 125 mm
Concrete Slab at fourth floor: 150 mm
Superimposed dead load: 4.8 kPa
Live Load: 4.8 kPa

All joints are pin connected. The frame spacing is 10 meters on center. The splices are at points B and D. Use
ASD only. Note. Neglect the bending and torsional moment of beams and columns.

14. Repeat no. 13 and design the base plate for the mentioned column.
