CE424/524 Assignment #10

Assigned: Thursday, November 17, 2016

Due Tuesday, November 29, 2016
Read Chapters 8 and 9 in Segui. Use the LRFD design approach in all problems.
(1) The beam is connected to the column with 7/8 diameter, Group A bearing-type bolts, as shown below.
Eight bolts connect the tee to the column. A992 steel is used. Is the tee-to column connection adequate?

(4) A W16x26 floor beam supports a 4-inch thick reinforced concrete slab with an effective width b of 32
inches. Sufficient anchors are provided to make the beam fully composite. The 28-day compressive strength
of the concrete is fc = 4 ksi. (a) Compute the moment of inertia of the transformed section. (b) For a
positive service load moment of 150 ft-kips, compute the stress at the top of the steel (indicate whether
tension or compression), the stress at the bottom of the steel, and the stress at the top of the concrete.

(5) Compute the nominal flexural strength of the composite beam of problem (4). Use Fy = 50 ksi.
(6) A fully composite floor system consists of W12x16 floor beams supporting a 4-inch thick reinforced
concrete floor slab. The beams are spaced at 6 feet, and the span length is 25 feet. The superimposed loads
consist of a construction load of 20 psf, a partition load of 15 psf, and a live load of 125 psf. A992 steel is
used, and fc = 4 ksi. Determine whether this beam satisfies the provisions of the AISC specification.
(7) A fully composite floor system consists of 40-foot long, W21x57 steel beams spaced at 9 feet center-tocenter and supporting a 6-inch thick reinforced concrete floor slab. The steel is A992 and the concrete
strength is fc = 4 ksi. There is a construction load of 20 psf and a live load of 250 psf. (a) Determine
whether the beam is adequate; (b) How many x 3-inch stud anchors are required for full composite
behavior?

(8) For the beam of Problem (6), (a) Compute the deflections before and after the concrete has cured. For
deflection of the composite section, use the lower-bound moment of inertia. Compute this as illustrated in
Example 9.7 of Segui, 5th Edition. (b) If the live-load deflection exceeds L/360, select another steel shape
using the LRFD design method.
