GEC 15: Purposive Communication
REACTION PAPER: “Wiring a Web for Global Good”

As Roslin said, words are very potent in that they can build nor destroy a person.
It’s our human nature to commit mistakes, even the smartest person in the world isn’t
exempted from this. Miscommunication exists when individuals or groups connect, but
one or more of the participants involved does not fully comprehend what has been said
or written. Since most miscommunications go unrecognized referring to completely
different things can lead to misunderstandings and create chaos, crisis, and challenges
individually and globally.  As stated in the speech, this could cause problems for
everyone. Global issues like war, corruption, slavery, oppression, racism, discrimination,
and poverty have arisen because of miscommunication. These global issues menace
our global security that threatens the rights and future of young people, adults, and
older people.
We often neglect communication as a part of our society. In fact, cliché as it is
that in every aspect of our lives, of each country, of the whole world that
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY. Communication can either solve or create problems. It
is how we represent ourselves, make requests, and express our feelings about the
world and others. It serves as a personal marketing and advertising tool for us. It is, in
my opinion, one of the most important intangible assets we have as humans. Having
effective communication and using our language as a powerful element to communicate
to the world should not be a privilege to people, everyone should be able to use and
access it. Besides, more advancements in the field of communication have been made
as time has passed and technology has evolved. The Internet allows for efficient
communication, and this changed the global scene indefinitely because it made
communication to different parts of the world easier and faster than ever before.  For far
too long, we have thought of languages as something that divides us. We always think
that if someone speaks that is different from ours is always a problem.   Yet, the
difference in language combats prejudices and stereotypes by promoting tolerance,
diversity, and understanding among communities. It allows us to empathize with other
cultures by broadening our horizons through a shift in attitude and mindset. Leaders
must be able to communicate across borders, regardless of their geographic location, to
gain a competitive advantage and achieve results.
We have seen that effective communication encouraged people in developed
and emerging nations to interact more conveniently. With this, we can focus on
resolving issues by drawing attention to global security and development. We now could
find common ground with the people we have met and will meet, as well as the ability to
organize and take collective action together with effective use of various modes of
communication and with our global ability to communicate effectively with one another.
TED Talks tells us that global issues cannot be solved by Europe or Africa alone, or by
a single speech, it is about putting a collaborative effort to create global institutions for
the security of an individual and world’s development. It is more than just knowing how
to speak a language; it is also about being able to influence and inspire others. So,
whatever language you speak, as long as your heart is in it to serve and you have a
strong mind to show to others, you're good to go persuade the world to move forward
and join forces in order to create a truly global society.
